Most golf punters will find it hard to back against Phil Mickelson winning the Northern Trust Open this week at the Riviera Club in California. The world number two, has won the tournament for the past two seasons and was second in 2007 – a clear cut case of ‘horse for courses’! The left hander, needless to say is a strong favourite at around the 6/1 mark to win, but Ladbrokes are offering a tasty 7/1 for Mickelson to make the hat trick.
With the ‘Tiger’ still crouching behind the scenes, the US PGA tour hardly seems like it has got underway yet. Four events have already been played this year producing four different winners but there has been no-one yet who has surfaced who looks likely to grab the tour by the ‘scruff of the neck’ and lay down a marker for the rest of the season – perhaps Mickelson can do that this week!
Next in the betting is World number three, Steve Stricker, who has not played for three weeks and who comes to the tournament having earned himself two top ten finishes already this year. Stricker was 10th in the SBS Championship and tied third in the Sony Open in Hawaii and looks to us like he could be a solid each way option for this with odds, currently of 14/1.

The form of former world number one, Ernie Els has not gone unnoticed by the bookmakers. Els has been working hard in practice and has finished his first two tournaments this year with great credit, being in a tie for 12th spot in the Sony Open and in a tie for 5th last week in the Farmers Insurance Open. Continued improvement for the ‘Big Easy’ could see him go close in this a tournament he last won in 1999. Els is a 25/1 chance with Ladbrokes, which represents fantastic each way value.
Three time Major winner, Padraig Harrington, looks likely to be the best bet for a European success in the tournament. The Irishman is playing his first tournament of the year and is a best price to win 25/1.
Jim Furyk, winner of the Chevron World Challenge at the back end on 2009 and currently the world number 5 is also making his seasonal reappearance. If he can start the year off in the same way as he ended 2009, then the Ryder Cup star can come close and should be considered a good each way opportunity with odds of 25/1.
