Rory McIlroy tees off in defence of his Dubai Desert Classic title this week looking to repeat his success from last season and consolidate his position in the top ten of the world rankings. The young Ulsterman has already got his year off to a solid start by finishing third in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship a fortnight ago clearly finding his form even at this early stage of the year. McIlroy is favourite in the betting with odds as short as 15/2 to win the tournament, but golf punters are still able to grab 9/1 from at least two Bookmakers, including Paddy Power.
As usual the event has proven its popularity and has attracted a top class field, which includes world number 4, Lee Westwood, who came so close to winning last week in the Qatar Masters, when third behind Swede, Robert Karlsson. Karlsson, returned to winning ways last week in Qatar, his last win came in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, back in September 2008 which he followed up by taking the Mercedez Benz Championship a week later. Karlsson, with odds of 15/1 is a man to be backed when in form, he was the Order of Merit winner in 2008 and is more than capable of winning once again this week.
Abu Dhabi winner, Martin Kaymer, tipped by many to be a Major winner this season, will be another who should perform well in Dubai, he finished in a tie for 4th place last season and has to be worth at least an each way plunge with odds of 11/1 also from Paddy Power.
For those who like backing longer odds, consideration should be given to the claims of Ross Fisher. 13th last season and ranked 21 in the world at the moment, Fisher is one of those players who always seems to be there or thereabouts and to our way of thinking at 20/1 is well worth supporting.
