The Nedbank Golf Challenge gets underway this week and despite the Race To Dubai being over there is still a strong field in contention at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa. World number one Lee Westwood again heads the betting at 3/1 with Paddy Power for the tournament which starts on Thursday, but South Africa's very own Ernie Els is a 5/1 bet and is likely to be challenging Westwood all the way.
The $5 million Nedbank Golf Challenge has been won by some famous names in the past, including Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie, and Lee Westwood will be keen to add his name to that list and claim the $1.25 million winner's prize. The new world number one is favourite to win this 12 man event, and finished second at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai and tied third at the Dubai World Championship recently. However he has failed to win a European Tour event during 2010 and at such short odds of 3/1 it may be worth looking elsewhere for better value.
South Africa's Ernie Els is a three times champion at the Nedbank Golf Challenge and is a 5/1 bet with Paddy Power. While Betfred bookmakers are offering a 'Beaten By Els' market and will refund all losing singles on the outright market up to £250 if your player finishes second to Ernie Els this week. Els knows what it takes to win this tournament and on home soil he looks like he could be the man to beat. His experience could prove vital come the final round on Sunday, and he looks worth backing to produce the goods this week.
Els' fellow countryman Retief Goosen is 8/1 in the betting, although Goosen has had a tough couple of years he is sure to be in and around the leaders in this 12 player tournament. He won in 2004 and should feel right at home on the South African course, and he is a 5/2 bet with paddypower.com to be the top South African this week.
Away from the South African contingent, England's Ross Fisher looks decent value as an 8/1 bet with Paddy Power bookmakers. Fisher produced a sensational, record equalling 8 under par 64 at the Dubai World Championship as he threatened the leaders early on in Dubai. However he fell away with a final round 76 that left him 6 under par and tied 13th. Therefore backing Fisher to start quickly again this week could be a good punt, and he is 8/1 to be the first round leader in the Nedbank Challenge and that looks good value.
Meanwhile Miguel Angel Jimenez is probably best left well alone here as he is an outside 25/1 bet, and it is not surprising after his previous three appearances here saw him finish 11th, 11th and 12th. Last year's tournament winner, the Australian Robert Allenby is 8/1 to repeat the feat.
