A stellar field will gather for this week's lucrative WGC-HSBC Champions tournament at the Sheshan Golf Club in Shanghai, China. Rory McIlroy is undoubtedly the form man in the field and he starts as favourite at odds of 9/2 with William Hill bookmakers, with the Northern Irishman desperate for a cut of the €5.1m prize purse.
McIlroy is €1.3m behind Luke Donald in the European Tour money list and he could close the gap as Donald is not playing this week. The winner receives €800,000 from this tournament and McIlroy is in red hot form.
In his last five events he has finished tied third at the European Masters, third at the KLM Open, runner up at the Alfred Dunhill, runner up at the Korea Open, and followed those fine performances up with a win at the Shanghai Masters last week. McIlroy clearly enjoys playing in Asia and it is well worth noting that he has finished fourth and fifth in the past two years at the Sheshan Golf Club.
Lee Westwood is challenging McIlroy for favouritism at 7/1 with Hills and few players have a course record to match the Englishman's. Westwood was runner up here last year when he lost out by a stroke to Francesco Molinari, while he was also runner-up in 2007 when he lost out in a play-off. His other two appearances yielded an eighth place and a twelfth place and we fancy he can finally go the extra step to win at Sheshan.
Westwood is another with an excellent record in Asia and he is in Luke Donald-esque form having notched up ten top ten finishes in his last fourteen, including tied fifth in the Shanghai Masters last week.
Elsewhere, three-time Singapore Open winner Adam Scott is priced 16/1, while the ultra-consistent Nick Watney is available at 22/1 after finishing fifth here in 2009. Martin Kaymer (25/1) is also well fancied after finishing tied sixth in this event in 2009.
Defending champion Francesco Molinari is back to defend his crown after picking up a fifth top ten of the season at Valderrama last time, although the 28/1 shot is still looking for a tournament win since his one stroke win last year.
Interestingly, two of the past four tournaments have been won by one stroke, with WilliamHill.com offering 5/2 for this year's event to be won by a margin of one stroke. The other two events were won in a play-off, with Hills going 12/5 for a play-off this time.
There are some tempting each-way punts in the field as well, with PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley available at 45/1. Bradley is acclimatised to Shanghai after picking up a tied eleventh at the Shanghai Masters, following on from his PGA Grand Slam of Golf win.
Meanwhile, Thomas Bjorn is available at 50/1 and the Dane is in excellent form, with three wins on the European Tour this season. Two of those victories came in his last five outings, which also included two top-ten finishes, and on current form and at such big odds he is tough to back against.
