USA Remains Odds On For The Ryder Cup Despite Europe's Fight Back At Hazeltine

A sea of red. Yells of "get in the hole". A scoreline of 4-0. It was all looking rather American at Hazeltine following the morning foursomes on Day One of the Ryder Cup but a brave fight back from the Europeans ensured that the USA crowd was quietened to a hush and we go into Day Two with things intriguingly poised at 5-3...

A Woeful Start

Europe couldn't have made a much worse start to their bid to win the Ryder Cup for a fourth time in succession as they lost all four matches in a session for the first time since 1981. The headline pairing of Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose were blown away by the American's own star act, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, and that set the tone for raucous scenes of dominance for the hosts.

Bet 365 reacted by pushing Europe out to 7/1 to win the Ryder Cup before the second session and things were looking bleak for Darren Clarke's men but, perhaps buoyed by memories of the 'Miracle of Medinah' when a European team last visited American shores, the visitors hit back in the afternoon.

Fourballs Recovery

Europe went on to win three of the afternoon's fourballs to reduce the deficit to 5-3 thanks to some hugely impressive play by the enigmatic Stenson, as well as a debut to remember for Thomas Pieters, who starred in a partnership with his more illustrious partner Rory McIlroy.

Full credit to Pieters as he had endured a morning to forget in partnership with Lee Westwood, who looked every inch an ageing player coming into the event off the back of a poor season.

Europe could at least look to another of their Ryder Cup stalwarts for inspiration as Sergio Garcia shone with Rafa Cabrera-Bello to pick up a point against JB Holmes and Ryan Moore, with only the out-of-sorts Martin Kaymer and Danny Willett coming up short in their match against Brandt Snedeker and Brooks Koepka.

The Latest Betting

Europe's recovery ensured that their price contracted from that earlier 7/1 to 13/5 (B365) but it is USA who remain in the ascendancy and they are 4/9 odds on (Bet Victor) to win the Ryder Cup for only the third time in 23 years.
