The PGA Tour resumes this week with the Honda Classic at the PGA National Champions Course at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The PGA Tour event betting is dominated by four Europeans in Accenture Matchplay winner Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy, but we like the chances of the ever consistent Matt Kuchar, at 20/1 with Victor Chandler, to provide some American cheer.
Donald, Westwood, and McDowell are in the top four in the world rankings at the moment, with only Martin Kaymer missing, and it looks to be a high quality field in Florida. Camilo Vilegas upset a similarly strong field last year to win, although the reigning champion is a huge outside bet at 60/1 with VCbet this year.
It will be interesting to see how the top players adapt back to strokeplay golf after the excitement of last week's WGC-Accenture Matchplay event where Donald produced a stunningly consistent performance. The Englishman was never behind in any of his matches and his win in Arizona saw him clipped right in in the betting for the Honda Classic as he went from sixteens to outright favourite at 12/1. He has form in the Honda Classic as well after winning it in 2006 and finished runner up in 2008, and despite last week being only his second appearance of the season it is difficult to back a player to record successive wins on this gruelling tour and it might be worth a look elsewhere this week.
Matt Kuchar could sneak his way past the European contingent at the top of the betting and he is available at an industry best price of 20/1 with Victor Chandler this week. He has been ultra consistent this term with four top ten finishes in his five appearances this year, including a third place in the Accenture. He was winner of the Honda Classic in 2002 and we fancy he could get that first win of the season come Sunday.
Another American also caught the eye in Arizona last week as the young hopeful Rickie Fowler destroyed the experienced Phil Mickelson in their matchplay fixture. He is still searching for that first PGA Tour win but looks to be a player in fine form and at 28/1 in the betting with VC Bet he could be worth an each way punt.
Of the rest of the European hopefuls, Lee Westwood is priced at 14/1 in the betting with VictorChandler.com but looks to be right off the boil this year after hitting the heights of world number one last year. He will no doubt be glad to return to strokeplay golf after he crashed out in the second round of the Accenture Matchplay yet again to Nick Watney - in eleven attempts Westwood has never been beyond the second round. He came ninth in the Honda Classic last year and on current form it is hard to see him improving on that.
Graeme McDowell is also priced at 14/1 after a third and nine place in his two American starts in 2011, while fellow European Rory McIlroy is a 16/1 punt. But we fancy the American Kuchar could continue his consistent vain of form and come up with that first tournament win this week.
