Martin Kaymer can take Lee Westwood's world number one crown with a strong performance in the Qatar Masters at the Doha Golf Club. The $2.5 million event gets underway on Thursday and Kaymer is favourite to win the tournament at odds of 6/1 with Victor Chandler bookmakers, and if he succeeds and Westwood finishes outside the top two Kaymer will be the new world number one.
The German can also overtake Westwood if he finishes second and Westwood finishes outside of the top 22, and that doesn't seem all that fanciful after Westwood's struggles in Abu Dhabi last time out. Kaymer was in top form at the Abu Dhabi Championship as he retained the title he won in 2009 and claimed the title by a margin of eight shots. With four tournament wins in less than six months, he is clearly a player on the up and looks to be the one to beat this week.
Westwood meanwhile struggled in Abu Dhabi as he could only manage a tied 64th place finish and he will have to get back to form quickly if he is to retain his status as the best player in the world. A visit to the Doha Golf Club for the Qatar Masters could offer some welcome relief as he has finished in the top six in two of his last three appearances, and he is available at industry best priced odds of 9/1 to win the tournament with VictorChandler.com.
Away from the world's top two, defending Qatar champion Robert Karlsson is amongst a strong field and he looks very tempting value at 12/1 with VCBet. His consistent style of play suits the Doha course, and he performed very well in his seasonal reappearance in Bahrain last week as he finished tied fifth with four rounds in the 60s. We fancy he could be right in the mix this week.
Runner up to Karlsson last year was the Spaniard Alvaro Quiros who is available at 14/1 to win the tournament he won in 2009. He held off the challenge of Henrik Stenson and British Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen, who is a 20/1 punt this week, to win it in 2009. Last week, Quiros finished tied eighth in Bahrain after a final round of 67, and his odds of 3/1 to place this week are well worth a look as he has great pedigree in Doha and looks to be in decent nick.
Paul Casey won his first tournament for 20 months as he claimed the Volvo Golf Champions title in Bahrain and he is industry best priced odds of 12/1 this week. Although he might be better placed to be top Englishman at odds of 7/2 with Victor Chandler, particularly after Westwood's poor showing last time out. Miguel Angel Jimenez came second to Casey in Bahrain despite a heroic final round, and he is 25/1 to win or 11/5 to claim a top ten place.
