The Carling Cup is contested by all teams from the four professional English football leagues. The competition is a straight knockout, much like the FA Cup, but the semi-finals are played over two legs. The winners can qualify for the Europa League, if they haven't already qualified for the Champions League via their Premier League finishing position.
Teams from the Championship, League One and League Two contest the Carling Cup from the outset and those Premier League teams who are not playing in European competition enter the Carling Cup at the second round. All teams then enter the competition at the third round stage. There are seven stages of the Carling Cup, including the final that is played at Wembley in February.
Many teams tend to rest players for their Carling Cup fixtures, to concentrate on their League matches, which makes betting on the Carling Cup very tricky. Last year's winners were Birmingham, who stunned Arsenal in the final.
Result: Birmingham 2-1 Arsenal
Birmingham upset the odds to beat Arsenal at Wembley and win the Carling Cup for the first time since 1963. Giant striker Nikola Zigic had given the Blues a first half lead before Robin Van Persie levelled. Man of the match, Ben Foster, pulled off a number of saves to keep Birmingham in it before an Arsenal defensive blunder let in Obafemi Martins to score an 88th minute winner and pull off an unlikely win.
The 2011/12 Carling Cup is now at the semi-final stage, after Crystal Palace stunned Man Utd in the quarter-finals. There will now definitely be a Championship side in the final, although Man City are hot favourites in the betting, with the semi-final draw as follows:
Semi-Final Draw:
Liverpool (1) v Manchester City (0)
Cardiff (0) v Crystal Palace (1)
*First leg score in brackets.
(Ties to be played on the weeks commencing January 9th and January 23rd 2012)
Quarter-Final Results:
Arsenal 0 - 1 Man City
Chelsea 0 - 2 Liverpool
Cardiff 2 - 0 Blackburn
Man United 1 - 2 Crystal Palace

The FA Cup is the premier English football cup competition and is one of the most historic competitions in world football. Many people enjoy betting on the underdogs during this competition, and many clubs have upset the odds in the past to cause a big cup upset.
The top Premier League clubs are short odds to win the FA Cup this season with Manchester United, Man City and Arsenal all well fancied, but it looks to be a hugely competitive betting market this season....
