The bi-annual African Nations Cup gets underway once again on January 10th with the host nation Angola taking on Mali and the tournament concluding on the 31st January. The tournament was shrouded in controversery after the Togo team bus was set upon by gunfire leading to the tragic death of three officials. Togo have left the competition as a result.
Favourites Egypt beat Ghana 1-0 in the final of the 2010 African Cup of Nations and in doing so became the first nation in the tournament's history to win for three consecutive times. It was also Egypt's sixth victory in the tournament.
The tournament has survived the test of time and has now been running since 1957 and has improved enormously due to the format having gone through several important changes down the years. The first tournament for instance comprised only of three teams, but these days Nations have to go through an intense qualifying period before making the finals, similar in fact to the European Championships.
The three most dominant teams in competition history have been Egypt, with six wins, followed by Ghana and Cameroon with four wins apiece. Egypt in fact have won the tournament for the last two times but only start as 9/1 in the African Nations Cup outright market odds. Favourites to win this year are in fact the Ivory Coast, who are as short as 5/2 to win the tournament for the second time, last winning in 1992.
Using exactly the same format as the European Championship, the sixteen qualified teams have been drawn in four groups, where they will play a round robin, with the top two teams qualifying for the quarter finals. The groups are:
Group A
Group B
Group C
Group D
Quarter Finals
Semi-Finals
Final
Egypt may have made it three consecutive African Cup of Nations titles but they'll surely be ruing the fact they missed out on qualification to this summer's World Cup in South Africa, especially considering the team's form on the continent.
Egypt missed out on World Cup qualification after losing to Algeria in a play-off in November, a team they beat 4-0 in the semi-finals of the ACN. This leaves hosts South Africa, beaten ACN finalists Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Algeria and Nigeria as the African nations taking their place at the finals in June 2012.
The Ivory Coast were the most fancied of these teams to do well in the Summer, although the draw with Portugal and Brazil, plus their disappointing display in Angola has raised question marks.
