Newcastle United travel to Wigan Athletic on Sunday in search of a much needed win at a ground where they haven't had much luck. Alan Pardew has just the one win to his name as Newcastle manager following his controversial appointment earlier this month. This win came in his first match, at home to Liverpool, but it's Newcastle's only win in their last six matches and they sit periously close to the drop zone following two defeats in a week to high flying Man City and Spurs. Wigan on the other hand have enjoyed a good Christmas period, with a valuable away win at Wolves on Boxing Day followed up with an excellent draw against Arsenal on Wednesday. The bookmakers make the home side favourites in the betting with Bet365 going odds of 8/5 to get another three points, whilst Newcastle can be backed at 9/5 and the draw 11/5.
The betting suggests this will be close but Wigan have won all five of the team's meeting's at the DW Stadium, four in the Premier League and one in the Carling Cup. There's never been more than a goal's difference in the final scoreline, so the odds of 3/1 that Wigan win by one goal makes some appeal. The last time these two sides met in Wigan, the three points wen to the home side in a 2-1 win on Boxing Day, 2008. before that however, the four previous meetings between the two sides at the DW Stadium ended 1-0 to the home side, a scoreline that can be backed at odds of 7/1 with Bet 365 on Sunday.
Charles N'Zogbia will be missing from the Latics flank following his red card against Arsenal midweek, which denies the influential winger a chance to shine against his former employers. Wigan are on a good run though and unbeaten in four. Their 2-1 win over Wolves on Boxing Day was a real six pointer and the 2-2 draw with Arsenal last time out was a bonus point, given they were losing with ten men and just ten minutes left on the clock before Sebastian Squillaci's own goal. This leaves Wigan just one point clear of the drop zone but a win on Sunday will see them leap-frog Newcastle in the Premier League standings.
Andy Carroll continues to spearhead the attack for Newcastle. After a defensive display against Spurs which didn't pay off, we can expect Alan Pardew's side to play with a little more adventure at Wigan on Sunday. The young Englishman has wracked up eleven goals in the league this season so far and is 9/2 shot to score first. He's also 11/8 to score anytime which looks the better value bet, whilst Ben Watson could be a big price at 11/1 to score first as he is on penalty duties for the home side.
