Middlesbrough Tipped To Win The Championship Title
The 2017/18 Championship season gets underway this weekend and pre-season favourites Middlesbrough are tipped to make a swift return to the Premier League under the tutelage of new manager Garry Monk...
|Friday 4th August - 7.45pm||Odds||Won/Lost||Bet|
|2017/18 Championship Season|
|Tips||Middlesbrough to win the league Best Bet||@ 7 / 1||Unibet|
|Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday to finish in the top two (any order)||@ 33 / 1||Skybet|
|Derby to be promoted||@ 9 / 2||Bet365|
Boro were actually very strong defensively in the top-flight last term but they couldn't hit a barn door with a proverbial banjo as they managed a paltry 27 goals and Monk has moved swiftly to rectify that weakness by signing the prolific Britt Assombalonga, as well as Martin Braithwaite and Ashley Fletcher, to complement the existing Patrick Bamford and Rudy Gestede.
Monk boasts a squad with Championship savvy and a manager who hardly has a blemish on his CV can guide the Teesiders back into the Premier League, with Boro worthy favourites at 7/1 with Unibet.
We are surprised to see Aston Villa join Boro at the head of the market at 7/1, even though they have made one of the more high profile signings in John Terry. Steve Bruce has signed players who were perhaps at their peak in 2010 as Chris Samba, Glenn Whelan and Ahmed Elmohamady have all arrived but it remains to be seen if they can improve a team that finished thirteenth in the Championship last term.
Fulham are next best at 9/1 but we prefer the look of last season's fellow play-off semi-finalists, Sheffield Wednesday, who will go again after missing out via the play-offs for the past two years. Carlos Carvalhal has strengthened his squad by signing Jordan Rhodes on a permanent basis (we are backing Rhodes to improve as a permanent Owls player as he will relish feeling wanted and he can relax) and George Boyd comes in.
We are going to take a speculative punt on Middlesbrough and Wednesday to finish in the top-two (in any order) at 33/1 with Sky Bet.
The Best Of The Rest
It is clearly a very competitive division and there has been plenty of money for Wolves under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo, who has benefited from the association of 'super agent 'Jorge Mendes with the club by signing the sought after Ruben Neves and Willy Boly. Wolves are 12/1 but we await to see how the new signings settle.
We'll also be waiting to see what impact Daniel Farke has at Norwich (12/1) - could he be the next David Wagner?
Meanwhile, Simon Grayson has a big job on his hands in trying to motivate a Sunderland (18/1) squad that resembled a rabble en route to relegation from the Premier League last season.
Likewise, Leonid Slutsky is charged with trying to take Hull (20/1) back into the Premier League following last season's relegation but they have been decimated by the sale of some key players.
Tom Huddlestone and Curtis Davies have both left Hull for Derby County and the Rams are an interesting proposition this season. They have twice reached the play-offs in the last four years and they should be well organised under Gary Rowett, with Bet 365 going 9/2 for Derby to be promoted.
At the foot of the table, we fear for Ipswich (10/3 to be relegated) who appear to be drifting under Mick McCarthy and it should be interesting to see what effect Mark Warburton has on an Assombalonga-less Nottingham Forest team that only evaded relegation on goal difference last year - Forest are 13/2 to be relegated this time.
