Martin O'Neill has emerged as the odds on favourite in the next Sunderland manager betting after Steve Bruce was sacked. Bruce was given the heave-ho after a dismal start to the season at the Stadium of Light and O'Neill is the 4/9 favourite to take over the reins according to Bet 365, while Mark Hughes and Rafa Benitez are well fancied.
Sunderland chairman Ellis Short opted to give Bruce the sack after seeing Sunderland win just two of their opening thirteen matches of the season, a string of results that leaves Bruce with the unenviable record of having lost 41 of his 98 games in charge since 2009.
He leaves the club just two points above the relegation zone in the Premier League and Short will be keen to appoint a new man as soon as possible.
O'Neill is the early front-runner and he has been without a job since he left Aston Villa on the eve of the 2010/11 season. It was thought that he would have found a job by now and he is always well backed whenever a top job becomes available. It would be a similar role to when he first took over Villa and he did a stellar job at Villa Park, while his motivational skills are very much needed in the North East at the moment.
Mark Hughes is well fancied in the latest betting and he is available at 11/4 with Bet365.com. Hughes too is without a job after he left Fulham last season, with many expecting him to take over at Villa. That move failed to materialise but he is well thought of after being harshly treated at Man City a couple of years ago.
Rafa Benitez is looking for a job as well as he has been away from the Premier League since he left Liverpool and he could prove to be a popular choice. His contacts around Europe could attract some interesting signings during the January transfer window and he is a Champions League winner after all. The fact he still lives in the north of England would be a huge plus and he is available at 12/1.
Meanwhile, Eric Black will take over as caretaker manager following Bruce's sacking and the man who has spent much of his career as an assistant is 20/1 to take the top job. Other managers around the 20/1 mark include former USA boss and current Egypt manager Bob Bradley, who is understood to be keen on a move to England, while Alan Curbishley is still on the lookout for a job since he left West Ham three years ago.
Elsewhere, former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is a 25/1 punt, while Lee Clark (25/1), who has done an impressive job as manager of Huddersfield, would be a popular choice as he played 74 times for Sunderland as a player.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won the Norwegian League in his first season as manager of Molde recently and he has been linked with a move to England, with B365 pricing him 25/1, while Steve McLaren remains an outside bet at 33/1.
