Man Utd v Crystal Palace Odds: Macheda looks tempting in the betting to score first

Manchester United are odds on favourites for their live Carling Cup quarter-final clash with Crystal Palace on Wednesday night. The Reds are 1/5 on to win the match, while the Championship side are a huge 11/1 to cause an upset when they visit Old Trafford, with the draw priced 5/1 by Boylesports.

United may have picked up some indifferent results of late, drawing with Benfica in the Champions League and with Newcastle in the Premier League, but they look well set to reach the semi-finals of the Carling Cup. They have won five of their last six quarter final ties in this competition and Sir Alex Ferguson will have fond memories of playing Palace.

United beat Palace in the 1990 FA Cup final to hand Ferguson his first trophy as Reds manager. Ferguson has said that he is likely to make wholesale changes to his side this week, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Ravel Morrison and Federico Macheda in line for rare starts.

Pogba is an 8/1 punt to score first on what could be his full debut for United, although we fancy Macheda could be in line for a start. The Italian striker rose to prominence with his stunning equaliser against Aston Villa two seasons ago and he has plenty to prove after struggling to nail down a regular first team place, with Boyles offering tempting odds of 4/1 for him to score first on Wednesday.

Ferguson will have to do without Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen again though as they both remain injured. United's second string should still have enough firepower to down Palace as they are unbeaten in their last thirteen matches against the Eagles.

Crystal Palace last beat United back in 1989 and their recent form doesn't bode well for a change in that trend. They have failed to win their last five and have failed to score for an astonishing 485 minutes, with Boylesports.com offering 5/6 for United to win with a clean sheet.

If a goal is going to come from anywhere for the visiting side it could come from Wilfried Zaha, who has three goals in three appearances in the Carling Cup, and he is a big 14/1 punt to score first.

However, Palace have failed to score in five of their last six against the Reds and while they are tough to beat, scoring goals remains a huge problem. Eight of their last nine have involved under 2.5 goals, as have five of United's last six, with under 2.5 goals looking good value at 11/8 on Wednesday.

Palace are currently tenth in the Championship and manager Dougie Freedman will have to once again do without the cup-tied Dekel Keinan, as well as the injured Jonathan Williams, Lee Hills and Alex Marrow, although Darren Ambrose is fit again.

It is tough to see Palace causing an upset here, even against a second string United side, and we fancy the correct score of 2-0 to the Reds could be the way to go at 11/2.
