The FA Cup third round draw produced some mouthwatering ties as the Premiership and Championship teams joined those still standing from Leagues One, Two and lower leagues. The matches are due to take place the weekend of the 8th January, and following the draw Chelsea, who host Roy Keane's Ipswich, remain odds on 4/1 favourites with Ladbrokes to retain the cup they won last year.
The stand out tie of the round is without doubt the only all Premiership tie that pits Manchester United against fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. It is sure to be a televised match and will provide an intriguing tie as Manchester United are an industry best price of 6/1 with Ladbrokes to win the tournament, while Liverpool have drifted out to 12/1 following the draw.
The draw provides a bitter pill for Liverpool fans as they would have been pinning their hopes of silverware on the FA Cup after a disappointing Premier League season, and a daunting trip to Old Trafford doesn't bode well for their season. They lost 3-2 to United earlier in the season as they were undone by a Dimitar Berbatov hat trick. The FA Cup tie promises to be just as eye catching and there will be plenty of opportunities in the betting.
Another tie that catches the eye is the repeat of the 1998 match between League Two Stevenage and Newcastle. The 1998 clash saw Stevenage, who were playing non-league football at the time, claim a historic 1-1 draw against the mighty Newcastle thanks to a Guiliano Grazioli goal. It was a famous match although an Alan Shearer inspired Newcastle went on to win the replay 2-1. Newcastle's odds of winning the tournament are 25/1 with Ladbrokes.com, but they will have to overcome a difficult trip to the lower league side first.
Elsewhere, Leicester City take on Manchester City at the Walkers Stadium which provides plenty of interest as it will put current Leicester manager Sven Goran Eriksson against the side that dismissed him in such acrimonious circumstances. Eriksson will be keen to get one over on Man City, and Man City will have to be at their best to justify their 7/1 tournament odds with Ladbrokes.
Former Premiership side Leeds travel to Arsenal for a repeat of their 2004 third round match. Arsene Wenger's side won that one 4-1 and will be confident of progress and are at odds of 7/1 to win the tournament. Sheffield United host Aston Villa and that looks to be a match that has the potential for an upset with Villa's recent struggles, while League One's Notts County or Bournemouth will travel to Sunderland's Stadium of Light.
