Maribor v Birmingham Betting: Blues underdogs in Slovenia

Birmingham City make the long trip to Slovenia to take on NK Maribor in Group H action with the English side available at 21/10 for an away win.

In their opening Europa League games Birmingham suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Group favourites and last year’s beaten finalists Braga whilst Maribor lost 2-0 away to Club Brugge of Belgium. Birmingham having been relegated from the Premier League earlier this year are finding life tough in the Championship and a European campaign is likely to make things even more difficult.

They needed a late goal from Chris Burke last Saturday, in front of their fans at St Andrews, to secure a point against fellow strugglers Barnsley. They have only won two of their seven games in the Championship but it’s their away form that is most concerning. After four away games, they have only managed one draw suffered three losses and conceded eleven goals.

Manager Chris Hughton will have to travel to Slovenia without defenders Curtis Davies and Stephen Carr meaning Houghton will have to use some inexperienced squad members in his starting line-up on Thursday evening.

Maribor surprisingly dumped Rangers out in the last qualifying round of the competition winning 2-1 at home before securing a 1-1 away draw at Ibrox to knock the SPL champions out of European competition.

The Slovenian outfit have been in fine form in their domestic league sitting top of the table on goal difference. They have scored 13 goals from their opening five home league games and have only lost once at home in their league campaign this season.

Birmingham, like Rangers, will find it tough to win in Slovenia and Maribor in front of their home fans will prove formidable opposition. Maribor at 6/5 in the match odds betting with Unibet are one of the best bets in Thursday’s Europa League action. Birmingham will struggle away from home and missing key defenders will only cause more concern for Chris Hughton and the Championship outfit could well suffer a heavy defeat.
