The 216th Merseyside derby takes place at Goodison Park as Everton face Liverpool in what is sure to be a lively encounter in the Premier League. The betting is really tight between the two sides for this one, with just three points seperating Liverpool from the hosts, but Everton having a game in hand. Bookmaker Bet365 goes 6/4 about Liverpool as slight favourites, whilst you can back Everton at 2/1 and the draw at 21/10.
Everton got off to their now traditional sluggish start following their opening day match postponement at Spurs, before going down 1-0 at home to the newly promoted Queens Park Rangers. Manager David Moyes stemmed the flow early on however as he team went on to beat Blackburn away before drawing at home to Aston Villa and beating Wigan at Goodison Park. A spirited effort at the Etihad Stadium couldn't stop a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City last time out and Moyes will have his team pumped up for this one.
Liverpool's form is almost the reverse of that of Everton. Despite two dropped points in their season opener at home to Sunderland, Kenny Dalglish's side then went on to beat Arsenal away and Bolton at home before they were de-railed at the Britannia Stadium in a controversial defeat to Stoke. Liverpool played well that day only to lose to a debatable Jonathan Walters penalty, but more woe was to follow when getting thrashed 4-0 at Spurs a fortnight ago, losing two players to red cards in the process. The Reds got back to winning ways last weekend beating Wolves at Anfield 2-1, but it wasn't a good display and Kenny Dalglish's side were rather fortunate to come away with three points.
It's honours even in this fixture in recent seasons, with both teams winning twice in the last four years. It was 2-0 to Everton last season at Goodison, a 12/1 shot for a repeat correct score on Saturday. The Toffees are in good form at home, having lost just once in their last fourteen games at Goodison, that aforementioned loss to QPR.
Everton always seem to play better as underdogs and although the betting is close for this one, the bookies clearly rate Liverpool as favourites. Liverpool will be hoping for a return to the starting line-up for captain Steven Gerard who has made a couple of substitute appearances on his return from a long injury lay-off. Gerard is an interesting looking 12/5 to score anytime with Bet 365, which could be used as some insurance in case he doesn't start.
These matches have been rather feisty in the past and it could be a good bet to back the combative Belgian Marouane Fellani to be shown a card at 5/4 with bookmaker Sky Bet. Neither win price looks particularly attractive given the teams respective problems, so the draw at 21/10 is the bet.
