After being defeated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League midweek, Manchester City return to Premier League action this Saturday with an away trip to Blackburn Rovers. City are favourites in the match odds at 6/11 with Unibet while a Rovers win is 5/1 and a draw offered at 11/4.
Roberto Mancini had believed his side could go to the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night and get a result, and he was right. There is so much talent in the City squad that they should be able to compete against the best clubs in Europe, but there is still a bit of naivety about this team. City were thought a lesson and were totally outclassed on a miserable night for all involved. Bayern’s swift attacking style was too much for Mancini’s side to deal with and they were 2-0 down before half time.
Now Blackburn Rovers are not comparable to Bayern Munich in their footballing ability at the moment but they do provide another tricky obstacle for this City side. The last time the Manchester club played in the Champions League, they followed this up with a 2-2 draw against Fulham in a match that Mancini said his players suffered from fatigue near the end. It was a lame excuse because Fulham had just played a Europa League tie midweek as well, but City’s performance that day posed many questions about this team.
If the squad cannot manage playing difficult Champions League matches midweek and then line out for another tough domestic encounter a few days later, then City could struggle to contain their title challenge. A couple of seasons ago, Tottenham qualified for the group stages of the Champions League and had a brilliant campaign, reaching the quarter-finals. The downside for Spurs was that their Premier League form dipped with the added intensity, competitive games in Europe and they could not sustain their challenge for a top-four spot and dropped a significant number of points on matches played after midweek action. Something similar could happen to Manchester City if they cannot continue to produce quality performances after their encounters in Europe.
Blackburn are coming off a 3-1 loss to Newcastle at St. James Park which has put them back in the relegation zone. Steve Kean’s side, however, have displayed a bit of fight in their last few games and their last home match was an incredible 4-3 comeback victory against Arsenal. City arrive at Ewood Park after a bit of bumpy patch midweek and Rovers will be looking to catch them out just as they did to the Gunners.
In the betting for Saturday, Blackburn will cause Man City more problems than people imagine. City are coming off a bad result in the Champions League and this will be a tricky test against a team who have been decent in recent weeks. A draw is a very tempting price at 11/4 but in the end Mancini’s side should have enough to get the win. Rovers can give them a scare though and both teams to score at 4/6 with Unibet looks like a good wager. City have shipped five goals in three away games so far this season so they are prone to conceding away from the Etihad Stadium.
