France v Nigeria Betting: The French are odds on to win last sixteen tie in Brasilia
France's odds of winning the 2014 World Cup have continued to contract following their impressive foray through the group stages in Brazil and they are firm favourites for their last-sixteen tie with Nigeria in Brasilia on Monday night (BBC1, 5pm). The efforts of Didier Deschamps' men have been in stark contrast to that of the French squad who crashed out of the group stages in South Africa in 2010 and there is a genuine belief that they can go far this summer.
Deschamps has worked wonders in turning things around as he left a number of troublemakers out of his squad for the World Cup and it is a move that has paid dividends. There have been none of the usual French fall-outs that have marred finals since they won the World Cup in 1998 and they are odds on to progress to the quarter finals this week.
The French are best price 8/15 odds on favourites to beat Nigeria with PaddyPower, who will refund losing first scorer, last scorer, correct score and scorecast single bets on the match if it goes to a penalty shoot-out. Nigeria have also been impressive in Brazil but they are a juicy 6/1 to beat France, while they are 16/5 to draw and take the game to extra-time.
Stephen Keshi's side did well to qualify from Group F as runners up as they drew their opening game 0-0 with Iran before they overcame Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 and they then lost their final group game 3-2 to Argentina. Their win over Bosnia was highly controversial as numerous refereeing decisions went their way but they gave Argentina an almighty scare last time out.
Ahmed Musa scored two goals against the Argentines as Nigeria threatened an upset, although it is difficult to see France defending quite as badly as Argentina did last week. Deschamps' men have only lost one of their last 14 internationals, keeping 10 clean sheets in the process, and they are 6/4 to win to nil with Betfred.
France came through the group stages as winners of Group E as they beat Honduras 3-0 and Switzerland 5-2, while Deschamps rung the changes to his starting eleven for the 0-0 draw with Ecuador with qualification already assured. They were already 5-0 up when they conceded two late goals to Switzerland so their defensive record is excellent and their attacking force is exceptional, with Karim Benzema in fine form.
Benzema came to Brazil under something of a fitness cloud following a poor end to the season with Real Madrid but he has scored three goals during the World Cup so far and he is 7/2 favourite to be first goalscorer in this France v Nigeria match. For a touch of value it might be worth a look at a scorecast of Benzema to score first and France to win 2-0 at 18/1 with PaddyPower's money-back offer in mind.
Nigeria's games do tend to be low scoring affairs as six of their last nine outings have gone under 2.5 goals and they have failed to score in four of those. BetVictor go 10/11 for under 2.5 goals on Monday night in Brasilia and Nigeria might look to keep things tight early on, although France's quality should tell in the end and the double result of a half-time draw and full-time France win is a 7/2 punt at this stage.
