Copa America Betting Preview: Hosts Argentina are odds on favourites

The 2011 Copa America gets underway on Saturday and tournament hosts Argentina start as hot favourites in the betting. The Argentines are priced 10/11 on by Paddy Power as they bid to win the competition for the first time since 1993, while defending champions Brazil are the next best at 2/1.

Group A: Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Bolivia

Tournament favourites Argentina look as though they should comfortably progress through the group stages as they attempt to make up for 18 years of hurt that has seen them fail to win silverware since their Copa America success in 1993. They are many people's favourites, with the likes of Lionel Messi in their ranks, but there will be huge pressure on them in their homeland.

Messi, who scored 53 goals for club and country last season, is 7/2 favourite to end as the tournament's top scorer and it is remarkable that people still doubt whether he can do it at international level. He is likely to be paired with 9/1 top scorer shot Carlos Tevez, who was controversially not included in the original squad but has since been added. Argentina should prove too strong for Costa Rica(275/1) and Bolivia(150/1), although an improving Colombia could be worth keeping an eye on at 25/1 in the betting - particularly with the Porto striker Falcao, who is a tempting 18/1 shot to be top scorer, leading their line.

Group B: Brazil, Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela

Defending champions Brazil are available at 2/1 in the betting with PaddyPower.com and they look the pick to us after winning four of the last five competitions. The pressure is all on Argentina and we fancy Brazil could edge out heir near rivals again, as they have done in the past two Copa America finals.

They can boast the much sought after Neymar, who has scored three goals in five international appearances, and he is a 9/1 shot to be top scorer. Paraguay look to be the biggest challenge to the Brazilians in the group stage after they reached the World Cup quarter-finals last year, and they are available at 25/1 for the title, with Ecuador(100/1) and Venezuela(150/1) completing the group.

Group C: Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Mexico

9/1 chance Uruguay look to have a tough task in the group stages but we fancy they are the biggest threat to Brazil and Argentina for the tournament title. The Uruguayans reached the World Cup semi-finals last year and have won the Cope America 14 times - the joint most with Argentina. There are few better strikeforces in the competition than Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan, who are 18/1 and 16/1 shots to be top scorer respectively. Forlan scored five goals in the World Cup and was also the Golden Ball winner.

Chile(12/1) look a dangerous proposition for Uruguay after reaching the last eight for four consecutive Copa America tournaments, while Peru(150/1) will make themselves hard to beat. Recent Gold Cup winners Mexico might look tempting at 50/1 but it is worth noting that they are sending out an inexperienced team and have had a far from comfortable build up to the tournament after eight players were suspended for breach of rules.
