Chelsea v Liverpool Odds: Back Daniel Sturridge in the first scorer betting

Chelsea and Liverpool meet at Stamford Bridge for the second time in ten days on Tuesday night, this time in the last eight of the Carling Cup. Liverpool won 2-1 last time and they are 7/2 to earn a repeat victory, although Chelsea start the match as favourites at odds of 4/5 with Bet 365, who will be streaming the match live on their website.

Andre Villas-Boas can ill afford another defeat as Chelsea endure their worst start to a season since Roman Abramovich bought the club back in 2003. They are 2/5 odds on to qualify for the Carling Cup semi-finals though, compared to Liverpool's odds of 7/4.

We fancy Chelsea could well have the edge for this tie as they have had a full 24 hours extra to recover from their 3-0 win over Wolves. In contrast, Liverpool played Premier League leaders Manchester City in Sunday's late kick-off and both sides are expected to ring the changes this week.

Villas-Boas is without the suspended John Terry and the cup tied Raul Meireles but Fernando Torres could get a chance to start against his former club. The Spaniard is 9/2 joint favourite, with Didier Drogba, to score first but Daniel Sturridge could be the value pick in the first scorer market. The young English striker has scored two in his last three appearances to take his tally for the season to seven, and he is available at industry best priced odds of 11/2 with Bet365.com.

The 3-0 win over Wolves was a much needed boost for Chelsea, who have only failed to score once in their last 23 Carling Cup ties. Liverpool have only failed to score once in their last 41 in the competition and both teams to score can be backed at 5/6.

The concern for Kenny Dalglish will be the lack of time his Liverpool side have had to recover from their 1-1 draw with Man City at the weekend. Dalglish is likely to ring the changes and Andy Carroll could start, with B365 pricing him a juicy 10/1 to score first.

Liverpool have won the two last two matches at Stamford Bridge but have only won four of their last 20 visits there. Meanwhile, four of the last five Chelsea v Liverpool matches have involved under 2.5 goals and under 2.5 could be worth a punt at 4/5 this week.

The Reds, who have won the Carling Cup a record seven times, have lost in the quarter-finals of the competition on each of the last two occasions that they have reached the last eight and we fancy they could exit at this stage for a third time in a row.

Liverpool may be on a ten match unbeaten run but with little more than 48 hours between two big matches we fancy Chelsea hold the edge. The Blues needed extra time to beat Everton and penalties to beat Fulham in their two Carling Cup matches so far this season, with Bet 365 offering a tempting 10/1 for Chelsea to win in extra time and 12/1 for them to win on penalties.
