Tottenham v Shamrock Odds: Rovers look a decent bet in the handicap market
Tottenham Hotspur take on Shamrock Rovers in the Europa League group stages at White Hart Lane on Thursday night with the bookmakers making Harry Redknapp's side long odds on favourites to take all three points. Irish bookmaker Paddy Power are going odds of 1/8 about the home side on Thursday, with Shamrock available to back at 16/1 and the draw 13/2.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has been very clear that he intends to use a virtual second string in the early stages of the Europa League and a very young looking Tottenham side earnt a credible 0-0 draw in Greece a fortnight ago against PAOK in the team's first Group A match. The likes of Harry Kane and Tom Carroll are likely to start against Shamrock, whilst Andros Townend and Iago Falque are also likely to gain starting berths down either flank. Roman Pavlyuchenko could start up front and the Russian forward heads the betting to score first with Paddy Power at 14/5 as he bids to impress the manager after a slow start to the season.
Shamrock lost their opening game in the group stages 3-0 at home to Russian side Rubin Kazan but will be buoyed by a 5-2 win over Bray Wanderers in their domestic league on Sunday and should have plenty of support in the ground after Spurs opened up extra areas of the ground for the Irish supporters. Rovers are level on points at the top of the Airtricity League in Ireland with a game in hand over Sligo Rovers as they near the end of their domestic season. The Dublin side find themseleves bottom of Europa League Group A after Matchday 1, but that won't dappen the players spirits having qualified for this satge of the competition for the first time in the club's history, beating Serbian side Partizan in the play-offs against the odds.
Spurs have failed to score in their last three European games at White Hart Lane and with the wholesale changes to personnel plus some extra support in the crowd for Shamrock this could be a match which is a lot closer than the odds suggest. The Shamrock part-timers do have a bit of quality about them and former Spurs midfielder Rohan Ricketts will be keen to put himself in the shop window on Thursday night. You can back Shamrock to win in the handicap betting with a two goal head start and that looks a decent bet at odds of 13/8 with Paddy Power.
Goals could well be at a premium at White Hart Lane and the under 2.5 goals odds of 7/4 also makes some appeal with Paddy Power. The visitors have conceded int he first half of their last five European games so a backing of Spurs' first goal to be in the first half is 1/4.
