Spain Tipped To Beat Germany In The European Under 21 Championship Final

The European Under-21 Championships draw to a close with what promises to be a superb clash between the two best sides in the tournament as Germany take on Spain in Friday's final in Krakow, Poland...

  • Spain have won four European U21 Championship titles - 1986, 1998, 2011, 2013
  • Spain have scored 12 goals in their 4 matches at these finals (average of 3 goals per game)
  • Saul Niguez has scored 5 goals in Poland this summer

How They Got There

Germany finished runners up in Group D by beating Czech Republic 2-0 and Denmark 3-0 before surprisingly losing 1-0 to Italy. They then broke English hearts in a penalty shoot-out (again) in their semi-final on Tuesday as they drew 2-2 before winning through 4-3 on penalties.

Stefan Kuntz's men were far superior to England despite missing the likes of Leroy Sane, Timo Werner, Julian Brandt and Joshua Kimmich to senior international duty at the Confederations Cup.

The absence of those players might be felt more keenly against a quality Spain side though and La Rojita are well worth backing to win at 19/20 with Paddy Power on Friday.

Albert Celades saw his side cruise through Group B as they beat Macedonia 5-0, Portugal 3-1 and Serbia 1-0, with Spain enjoying the luxury of rotating their whole team for that win over the Serbians. They then showed their class in a 3-1 victory against Italy in the semi-finals and they should be far fresher than their German counterparts after easing through their last-four match in normal time.

Goals Galore?

Spain have been irresistible going forward as they were the top scorers with nine goals during the group stages and Saul Niguez has shone brightest with five goals during these finals. Niguez is 15/2 to be first goalscorer with Sky Bet on Friday.

Niguez scored a hat-trick in the win over Italy and he could fire the four-time European Under-21 Championship winners to a fifth title in an entertaining game.

The Spain win and over 2.5 goals is a tempting 2/1 with Ladbrokes and five of the past seven finals in this tournament have produced at least three goals. It is difficult to see either of these teams sitting back and keeping things tight but the pressure of a final can do funny things to people and we will keep it simple by backing Spain for a deserved win.
