A much changed Republic of Ireland will take on Uruguay on Tuesday night in an international friendly at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has opted to rest many of his senior players for the match and as a result Uruguay have edged favouritism according to Boylesports bookmakers as they price them as 6/4 favourites. Ireland can be backed at odds of 19/10 meanwhile and the draw is an 11/5 punt.
Ireland ensured their Euro 2012 qualification campaign continues smoothly as they beat Macedonia 2-1 at the weekend. It was a result that takes them to joint top in Group B and they look well set to mount a charge on next year's Championships. Their immediate focus though is Tuesday's friendly match and Trapattoni has opted to release several of his main men as Richard Dunne, Robbie Keane, Damien Duff and Kevin Kilbane return to their clubs.
In their absence several young players will be given their chance to shine but it is one of the few remaining senior players who will hope to continue to shine. Aiden McGeady broke a 38 match goal drought for his country by scoring the opener against Macedonia and the Spartak Moscow looks good value to score anytime this week. McGeady has generally been a freescoring winger, both at Celtic in the SPL and for Spartak in the Europa League, but has struggled at international level and that goal could be just what he needs as he is 3/1 to score anytime with Boyles.
His goal against Macedonia ensured the Republic of Ireland have now scored in nine of their last ten matches and both teams to score on Tuesday is available at odds of 5/6. Ireland have also won five of their last eight home matches but that is a run of form that will be severely tested by last year's World Cup semi-finalists Uruguay.
The Uruguayans reached the semi-finals thanks in part to a last minute Luis Suarez handball against Ghana, although the Liverpool striker won't be in Dublin this week. So it is his strike partner and former Manchester United man Diego Forlan who will carry the burden of scoring the goals. Forlan was exceptional at last year's World Cup and looks a different player to the one who struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League with United, and he is 11/2 favourite in the first goalscorer market with Boylesports. He looks a decent punt at those odds as he has scored nine goals for Atletico Madrid in La Liga this season and could cause the Irish youngsters plenty of problems.
Uruguay have lost their last two international friendlies, 2-0 to Chile in November and 2-0 again to Estonia on Saturday. That loss to Estonia came in difficult snowy conditions though and they should find conditions in Dublin much more to their liking. We fancy there could be goals on the menu for this game and over 2.5 goals can be backed at odds of 5/4 as the technical ability of the Uruguayans could create problems for a much changed Ireland side.
