Northern Ireland will look to bounce back from their defeat to Serbia at the weekend when they play Slovenia at Windsor Park on Tuesday night. The Group C Euro 2012 qualification fixture has taken on added importance after that defeat and Nigel Worthington's side can be backed at an industry best of 15/8 in the betting with Victor Chandler. Slovenia are marginal favourites at 13/8 though and the draw can be backed at 9/4.
The defeat to Serbia was Northern Ireland's first of the Euro 2012 qualification campaign and saw them drop to fifth in the table. A win on Tuesday could see them rise to as high as second in the table and the last time they played Slovenia, in the reverse fixture in September, they emerged with a 1-0 win.
Their preparations this week have been disrupted by injuries however as Kyle Lafferty, Aaron Hughes and Steven Davis have all been ruled out. Add to that list the suspended David Healy and Worthington has quite a selection dilemma. Worthington has called up Millwall striker Josh McQuoid, although the former Bournemouth man hasn't had much match time of late and the other likely starter up front, Warren Feeney, has scored just once for Oldham this season and it may be better to look elsewhere for goalscorers in the betting this week.
Set pieces could be crucial and West Brom's Chris Brunt offers plenty of threat from free kicks and could provide decent value as he is available at 13/5 in the anytime scorer market with VictorChandler.com. Worryingly for Northern Ireland they have failed to score in nine of their last thirteen matches though and a Slovenia clean sheet this week is priced 11/8. Furthermore Northern Ireland have failed to win in their last six fixtures at home, although they have won five of their last seven European qualification home matches, and could come under severe pressure from Slovenia.
The Slovenians are second in Group C after their narrow 1-0 defeat to table toppers Italy at the weekend. A Thiago Motta goal separated the two sides but they will take great heart from the performance and head to Windsor Park knowing a defeat would see the Irish overtake them. They do boast Milivoje Novakovic in their ranks though and the striker has scored two in five in the qualification stages and he is favourite in the first goalscorer betting with Victor Chandler at 11/2, which could be worth a look.
Slovenia have only won two of their last eight European qualification matches but with Northern Ireland missing so many key men through injury a draw might be the way to go in the betting. Furthermore, Northern Ireland's poor recent home record makes that even more tempting and a low scoring draw looks could be a decent punt, with the correct score of 1-1 available at 5/1.
