The Premier League bursts back onto the scene this week following a stunning weekend of FA Cup action. While a number of high profile top flight clubs made embarrassing exits to lower league clubs, Sunderland and Swansea were able to rest up and focus on Tuesday night’s game at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland have stormed up to 11th in the table following a run of five wins from their last eight games. They were in real trouble before Christmas with the club hovering dangerously above the relegation. However, Martin O’Neill and his troops have admiringly turned things around and his side will now be targeting another three points, with the hosts at 11/8 with Paddy Power to record their third league victory in a row.
Meanwhile Swansea can be backed at 2/1 to come away with the honours, while a draw could prove to be the way to go at 23/10. The Swans have become a hard team to beat in recent weeks, having lost just one of their last 10 matches in all competitions, with the single defeat away to Arsenal in an FA Cup third round replay. Their 2-0 victory away to Chelsea in the League Cup was the stand-out result but they have also managed to hold an in-form Everton side to a draw at Goodison Park.
However, Michael Laudrup’s men have now played a whopping nine games since Christmas and he will be hoping his side don’t fun out of steam. They may have lost just one of their last six league games on the road but they are yet to win away from home this year.
The Black Cats have scored three goals in each of their last two league games. Steven Fletcher bagged a brace in his side’s 3-2 victory at Wigan and he can be backed at 6/4 to grab his 11th league goal of the campaign. The striker also scored both goals in the last encounter between the two sides and is available 9/1 to do so again on Tuesday. Meanwhile Craig Gardner has got a couple of goals to his name in recent weeks and could be a tempting punt at 5/1 to score anytime.
Swansea may have failed to score in three of their last four league and cup games but at 7/4 star man Michu is worth a bet to extend is league total to 14 goals. To date the Spaniard has enjoyed a stunning debut season in the Premier League and will no doubt be buoyed from signing a new four-year contract last week.
The teams played out an entertaining 2-2 back in September and the honours could again be shared on Tuesday night. A draw can be found at 23/10 with Paddy Power Bookmakers, while a 1-1 scoreline is available at 5/1.
A Sunderland win could propel them into the top half of the table, providing an out-of-form Stoke don’t beat Wigan. The hosts will be looking to score three goals for the third league game in a row, making them a tempting bet at 18/1 to record a 3-1 win, while they are available at 4/1 to win with three or four total goals in the game.
