The North East rivals Sunderland and Middlesbrough go head-to-head at the Stadium Light on Sunday in the FA Cup fourth round. The Wear-Tees derby may not have the same hype and hysteria as Sunderland vs Newcastle but both clubs will still be gunning for both the win and local bragging rights. Sunderland have been priced as the 4/6 favourites with Boyle Sports, while Boro can be backed at 17/4, with a draw available at 12/5.
A rejuvenated Sunderland have won an impressive six out of nine matches under manager Martin O'Neill. The passionate boss has completely transformed the club’s fortunes and created a real buzz of excitement in Wearside. He has managed to steer The Black Cats well clear of the relegation zone into 10th and they are now looking for a decent cup run.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough are pushing for promotion in what has turned into an extremely competitive battle at the top of the Championship. Sunday’s cup encounter will come as a welcome distraction as their league form has dipped recently with two defeats since the previous round.
Sunderland brushed aside Peterborough at the London Road Stadium in the third round, while Boro scraped past Shrewsbury as they avoided an upset against the League Two side. There have been six FA Cup meetings between the sides, with Sunderland winning three and drawing two. However, they haven’t met in the competition since way back in 1975 when Middlesbrough recorded their one and only victory. They have met in the league numerous times since then with the spoils shared in their last encounter in 2009.
Due to the contrasting recent form of both sides Sunderland are a tempting bet at 6/1 to win 2-0, while a 2-1 victory is available at 15/2. If Boro can brush aside their recent league defeats and find the form they showed back in December then they will give themselves a fighting chance, with a 1-0 win available at 10/1. Alternatively a 1-1 draw can be found at 6/1.
If your player scores the second goal of the game Boylesports will refund your losing first goalscorer stake. The last eight fixtures between the sides have had at least two goals. Nicklas Bendtner looks a good bet as the 9/2 first goalscorer, while Connor Wickham and Stephane Sessegnon are available at 5/1. Boro’s Marvin Emnes can be backed at 15/2 to score the opener, while Lukas Jutkiewicz and top league goalscorer Scott Mcdonald have been priced at 8/1.
