Barcelona remain the bookmakers favourites to retain the Champions League trophy next May in Munich following the draw for the group stages in Monaco this week. The reigning champions were drawn in Group H, alongside another European powerhouse in the shape of AC Milan, plus two minnows in Bate Borisov of Belarus and debutants Viktoria Plzen of the Czech Republic. Pep Guardiola's side are 2/1 best price favourites to win the Champions League for the fourth time in seven years with bookmaker Paddy Power, whilst the Irish firm also make them 1/4 to top the Group H.
There were mixed fortunes for the English sides in the Champions League draw, but the bookmakers make Manchester United, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal all short odds to qualify from their respective groups, with William Hill going odds of 10/11 that a British team reaches the 2012 Champions League final next May at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Paddy Power make all four teams favourite to win their respective groups.
Manchester City make their debut in the Champions League and on paper probably have the toughest draw of the four English sides. However, such is the size and quality of Roberto Mancini's squad, Paddy Power still make the blue half of Manchester favourites to top a Group A which contains Bayern Munich, Villarreal and Napoli, at odds of 5/4, with City 14/1 fifth favourites in the outright betting.
Manchester United have the easiest draw on paper and this is reflected in the price, with Paddy Power going 1/4 about their chances of winning a Group C which contains Benfica, FC Basel and Romanian champions Otelul Galati. Last year's runners' up are 7/1 third favourites to win their fourth European Cup, with that price shortening since their good start to the Premier League season and this favourable group stages draw.
Andres Villas Boas will manage Chelsea in Group E of the group stages, with some tough trips to Valencia and Bayer Leverkusen and Genk making up the numbers. Chelsea re 8/15 to top the group and 9/1 fourth favourites to lift the trophy for the first time next May.
Arsenal struggled to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, coming through a play-off with Udinese to book their place. The UEFA gods have been kind to Arsene Wenger however and it might be a sign of the Frenchman's luck changing that Arsenal were drawn in a Group F containing Marseille, Olympiakos and Borussia Dortmund. All three matches represent tough away fixtures however and Arsenal are odds against 11/10 to top the group.
Elsewhere, Champions League second favourites Real Madrid are 1/3 to win Group D with Lyon, Ajax and Dinamo Zagreb, whilst 2010 winners Inter Milan are odds on at 4/7 to top a Group B containing CSKA Moscow, Lille and Trabzonspor.
