2010 Champions League Group Stage Draw and Latest Betting

The draw for the 2010/11 Champions League Group Stage has now been made, with the 32 qualifying team dividing into 8 Groups, with the top two from each going through to the last 16 knock out stage, which will not get underway until the New Year. Favourites in the latest betting for the tournament are 2009 winners, Barcelona, who, by and large, have been cut following the draw from 3/1 to 5/2 with most Bookmakers, however the 3/1 is still available from Ladbrokes.

Next in the betting at 5/1 comes Barcelona’s biggest rivals, Real Madrid, now coached of course by Jose Mourinho, who coached Inter Milan to their Champions League success last season. Could he now coach Real to deny Barcelona once again? There is no doubt that Mourinho, Real Madrid and Barcelona will provide the biggest talking points in the Champions League this season.

Barcelona in fact have been drawn in Group D, along with FC Panathinaikos, FC Copenhagen and Rubin Kazan, the team that defeated the Catalans in that famous match at the Nou Camp in the Group stages last season. Defending champions, Inter Milan, who have been drawn in Group A have a much tougher task on their hands, with Werder Bremen, Tottenham Hotspur and FC Twente to tackle. Nonetheless they are still a team that have been very much kept together by new boss, Rafa Benitez after the departure of Mourinho to Real Madrid and will be a major force to be reckoned with once again this season. Inter have been made favourites in the betting to win the Group, but Spurs, who are quoted at 9/2 second favourites to win the Group themselves, will have the belief that they have enough about them to get through as well, for which they are 4/6 to qualify.

The Group that will interest British fans the most will be Group C, where Manchester United have drawn Rangers, the Scottish champions, as well as Valencia from Spain and Bursaspor from Turkey. United are the obvious favourites to qualify with odds of 4/11, with Valencia at 9/2, Bursaspor at 11/1 and Rangers around 33/1. Rangers fans will be interested in the 9/2 on offer fro them to qualify from the Group, a feat that is certainly not beyond them.

Chelsea who are third favourites behind Barcelona and Real Madrid with odds of 11/2 with Ladbrokes.com to win the Champions League this season, have what looks to be a more than reasonable draw, with Marseille, Spartak Moscow and MSK Zilina, from Slovakia to overcome. All three teams may pose a challenge for the London side on their own grounds, but Chelsea’s record at Stamford Bridge should see them qualify in top spot comfortably.

Arsenal too seem to have a comfortable Group, with Shakhtar Donestsk, the Ukrainian champions looking the biggest danger. The Gunners however will be confident of qualification and their draw it seems has scared the Bookmakers a little who have cut their odds of winning the competition outright from 16/1 to 14/1.

If there is a Group of Death it will br Group G, which contains Real Madrid, AC Milan, Ajax and Auxerre. The first three mentioned have won Europe’s top prize 20 times between them over the years, although at this moment in time it is ‘Real’ who will be the team to beat. The Spanish giants are 5/1 to win the Champions League outright and 8/11 odds on to win the Group
