Wales start as favourites for their final Carling Nations Cup clash with Northern Ireland on Friday night, with Victor Chandler making them 20/21 on to pick up their first win of the campaign. Northern Ireland are winless after two matches as well ahead of the match at the Aviva Stadium and they are available at odds of 13/5, with the draw priced 5/2.
Welsh manager Gary Speed has claimed his side have been treated as 'poor relations' during the tournament so far after his side lost 3-1 to Scotland on Wednesday - the first time they had lost to the Scots since 1984. It was the second defeat of the tournament following their 3-0 loss to Republic of Ireland in their first match and they are in desperate need of a win to halt a run of six consecutive defeats in all competitions.
There was one bright spot for Speed's inexperienced side in mid-week as Robert Earnshaw scored the first goal of Speed's reign. Earnshaw was named captain and immediately repaid his manager's faith by opening the scoring. It was Earnshaw's second goal in as many games after he scored in the Championship play-offs for Nottingham Forest last week and he actually scored against Northern Ireland in a 2-2 draw six years ago. He looks very tempting at 11/2 to score first again on Friday as he looks to put himself in the 'shop window' with his future at Forest far from certain.
Wales's dismal scoring form is still a concern though as they have scored just two in their last six matches and it is fair to say that under 2.5 goals could be worth a look at odds of 3/4 with VCBet, particularly with Northern Ireland struggling as well.
Northern Ireland have failed to score in five of their last nine matches, including their last two, and they have only scored four during those nine - it is 2 years, or 19 matches, since they last scored more than two goals in a match. With that in mind a Wales clean sheet could provide a bit of value at 11/8.
Nigel Worthington's side were thumped 5-0 by Republic of Ireland on Tuesday to follow up their 3-0 defeat to Scotland in their first match and their threadbare squad was further stretched this week with the withdrawals of Steven Davis and Sammy Clingan.
It is difficult to see where goals are going to come from, with Warren Feeney the favourite to open the scoring for them at 8/1 with VictorChandler.com despite not scoring in eighteen matches.
We fancy Wales to finally pick up a win against a Northern Ireland side that have failed to beat them in three attempts, with the correct score of 1-0 an 11/2 punt. The double result of a half time and full time Wales win also looks decent at 2/1, particularly after they started so well against Scotland in mid-week.
