Roberto Martinez was livid last weekend after his Wigan side were denied a win after a controversial Blackburn goal in the Premier League. The game was an enthralling 3-3 battle but Rovers’ second goal should not have stood after Morten Gamst Pederson dribbled the ball in from a corner and crossed for Junior Hoilett to head home.
The referee believed that Yakubu had touched the ball to put it into play from the corner to allow Pedersen to cross, but from highlights it appeared that Yakubu hadn’t actually made contact with the ball.
If the goal hadn’t of stood, Wigan would have likely saw out the game for their first win in eight. Instead they still sit rock-bottom of the league and are in desperate need of a win to get closer to safety. They are currently on six points, five behind Wolves in 17th.
The bookmakers don’t believe that victory is going to come anytime soon and Unibet have them priced at 4/1 for the win against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. The home side are 7/10 with Unibet for the win while a draw is offered at 5/2.
Sunderland could do with a win themselves to get some breathing room from the relegation zone. Steve Bruce’s side are on 11 points but sit in 15th thanks to their goal-difference over Fulham and Wolves who are also on the same points. The Black Cats are coming off a 0-0 draw at home to Fulham which was probably a fair result for both sides. Neither could find the breakthrough and were deserving of the win and all three points.
Although they have secured draws in their last two home games, Steve Bruce will be happy that his side are picking up points. They have now secured five points in their last four games, with a loss to Man United at Old Trafford the only time they failed to take something from recent matches.
Their odds say they should beat Wigan on Saturday but it might be best to back the draw. Wigan suffered an injustice last weekend and they will be fired up for this game. Roberto Martinez’s side showed a lot of fight and spirit against Blackburn and they will do the same at the Stadium of Light.
They scored two goals in first-half last Saturday but were pegged back after the break and the same might happen here. Sunderland were lacklustre against Fulham but Steve Bruce will know that his side must at least secure a point here or the pressure will be on.
Wigan to be winning by half time is offered at 4/1 with Unibet.com while a Wigan/Draw in the half time/full time market is a big price of 15/1.
