Watford tackle Tottenham at Vicarage Road on Friday night as both teams vie to become the first side to book their place in the FA Cup fifth round. Spurs are the odds-on 4/9 favourites with Paddy Power to win in 90 minutes, while Watford can be backed at 6/1 to cause a shock, with a draw priced at 10/3.
The teams go into the match in contrasting positions in their respective leagues. While Spurs are flying high up in third in the Premier League, Watford are struggling towards the wrong end of the Championship. However, as we know league form generally means nothing when it come to the FA Cup and Watford will be gunning to inflict an upset upon Harry Redknapp’s men.
Spurs have been known to take their foot of the gas - as Wolves and Swansea can testify - but while the FA Cup is not their main focus this season it is a competition that the fans would love to win and they have at the helm a manager who won it recently in 2008 with Portsmouth. Although Redknapp himself is currently involved in a tax evasion court case and it will therefore be interesting to see if this has a negative effect on his team’s preparations.
You have to go back over 20 years since Spurs last won the FA Cup. They have been halted at the fourth round in three of the last five years, while Watford have made it past the fourth round just once in their last four attempts. The Hornets have never won the prestigious trophy but they did manage to reach the semi-finals in 2007, only to be thumped 4-1 by Man Utd. Spurs reached the last four back in 2010 and will be looking to go a couple of steps better this time around. They are currently one of the favourites in the outright betting, with Paddy Power pricing them at 5/1.
Tottenham were too strong for Cheltenham in the third round, while Watford beat Bradford 4-2 in an entertaining tie. Tottenham have won four and drawn two of the last six meetings between the sides, including a 2-1 win at Vicarage Road back in 2008. They can be backed at 11/2 to come away with a 2-0 win , while a 3-1 scoreline can be found at 10/1. Watford can be backed at 19/1 to sneak a 1-0 win or 22/1 to win 2-1, with a 1-1 draw priced at 13/2 with Paddy Power.
Jermaine Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor have both been priced at 16/5 to grab the opener, while Roman Pavlyuchenko is available at 7/2 with Paddy Power. Redknapp may decide to give some of his fringe players a chance to shine, making Giovani Dos Santos a good bet to score first at 11/2, while Niko Kranjcar has been handed odds of 7/1. Watford’s Marvin Sordell, Craig Beattie and Chris Iwelumo can all be backed at 10/1 to be the first goalscorer.
