The end of the Premier League season has brought about plenty of movement in the betting to be next West Ham manager as Alex McLeish and Ian Holloway were both clipped in. Former Newcastle manager Hughton remains favourite though and he is a best price of 5/2 with Bet 365, but there is plenty of competition for the job at Upton Park.
The size of the job facing a potential new manager was highlighted by the limp final day 3-0 home defeat to Sunderland that compounded a season in which the Hammers finished bottom of the Premier League and face a season in England's second tier next year.
Steve McLaren had been the early frontrunner but quickly ruled himself out of the running for the Championship job, although the Upton Park board will no doubt be looking for a quick return to the Premiership.
Chris Hughton certainly fits the bill as a manager who has 'been there and done that' as he took Newcastle straight back up from the Championship last season before being, somewhat harshly, sacked earlier this season. He had taken the Magpies to a respectable mid-table position in the Premier League before being ousted and as a young manager he could be a welcome choice with Hammers fans.
However, according to the betting Hughton faces stiff competition from a host of more experienced managers.
Alex McLeish shortened to an industry best of 7/2 from 8/1 with B365 following Birmingham's relegation from the Premier League and he is another man who has plenty of experience of gaining promotion from the Championship. His position at Birmingham looks far from secure despite winning the League Cup and the promise of Europa League football next season. He has received the often dreaded 'vote of confidence' from the Birmingham board and while he isn't renowned for his attractive style of play he is a man who gets the job done.
Sam Allardyce, available at 4/1, is another whose style of football is far from easy on the eye but he knows how to get results. He enjoyed a fine spell at Bolton, where he achieved promotion and several steady seasons in the Premier League, and he could be relied upon to get results. But most Hammers fans will want to play 'the West Ham way' and it is doubtful whether Allardyce would provide that.
Ian Holloway is an interesting punt at 16/1 with Bet365.com after he shortened from 40/1 following Blackpool's relegation. He has earned plaudits for his attractive style of play on a shoe string budget and could well be a popular choice.
Elsewhere, Neil Warnock is available at 12/1 in the betting with Bet 365 amid rumours that his position at QPR is unsafe, despite winning promotion to the Premier League. While Cardiff manager Dave Jones is 14/1 after failing to gain promotion yet again and he could well be looking for a new challenge in the near future.
Martin O'Neill continues to be available at 16/1 but he opted against taking the job in January, and at the moment Chris Hughton leads the way in a competitive market to be next West Ham manager.
