England favourites to beat mexico in World Cup warm up

England play their final game at Wembley on Monday night before the 2010 World Cup, playing host to fellow World Cup qualifiers, Mexico. Fabio Capello's men are the odds on favourites to provide the sell out crowd with a winning send off as the Italian makes his final preparations ahead of the trip to South Africa with Ladbrokes.com offering odds of 1/2 about the England win.

The starting XI for the game will be selected from the already named preliminary 30 man squad but it is not known how much this will reflect the starting XI in the much anticipated England v USA game which will open the Three Lions' bid to win the 2010 World Cup in just under two weeks time remains to be seen. It is already known that David James, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Ashley Cole and Joe Cole will all play no part in the game after playing in the FA Cup last week. This will give an opportunity to some of the players who are not so certain of a place on the plane to Johannesburg to impress Capello ahead of him naming his final 23 man squad on 1st June. This is likely to incldue a first cap for Man City's Adam Johnson, Tottenham's Michael Dawson, a second cap for his Spurs team mate, Tom Huddlestone and an appearance from West Ham midfielder, Scott Parker, who has yet to play for England under Fabio Capello. England fans can also expect to see Jamie Carragher wearing the Three Lions for the first time since his penalty miss in the Quarter Finals of the 2006 World Cup v Portugal. The Liverpool defender retired from International football when Steve McClaren was in charge but Capello has managed to convince him to make a come back that is sure to prove most welcome given his experience.

Fans favourite, Wayne Rooney, is likely to start against Mexico but is not expected play the full 90 minutes due to over-caution regarding his ankle, which although not a major threat, is still receiving treatmant. The Man Utd forward is a 7/2 chance to score the first goal of the game which is reasonable value considering he is just 16/1 with Ladbrokes to score a hat-trick. Who Capello chooses to partner Rooney remains to be seen but Jermain Defoe is the favourite of the other four strikers at odds of 9/2 with Bent and Crouch both chalked up at 5/1 and Emile Heskey 6/1.

There is no questioning that England will take this game seriously and want to leave for South Africa on a winning note but neither Capello or the Mexico Coach, Javier Aguirre, are going to want to be invovled in a fast or physical game, making correct score predictions for this match a little trickier than normal. A 2-0 England win is the favoured outcome with the bookies at 5/1 whith a 1-0 win a 6/1 chance and a 1-1 draw 11/2.

The squad has been training at altitude in Austria this past week and making a flying visit back to London for this send of a nice gesture to the fans against quality opposition who themselves will be hoping to impressing at the World Cup having been drawn in Group A and will play France, Uruguay and hosts, South Africa. It is even a possibility the England could face the South Americans in the Quarter Finals if both teams finsih top of their respective group before successfully progressing past the last 16.

England will fly back out to its training camp in Austria on Tuesday morning for more training ahead of next Sunday's final friendly versus Japan in Graz, two days before Capello names his final squad and three days before the team fly to South Africa for what is believed to be England's best chance of winning the World Cup in years, for which bookmakers are already reporting record numbers of bets being placed on Capello's men winning the torunament and the current best odds of 13/2 (with Betfair) about them being World Champions the next time they play at Wembley are not expected to be around much longer.

Verdict

Expect Fabio Capello to take this game very seriously as a win in front of the England faithful will be a huge boost of confidence ahead of the World Cup tilt in South Africa and an England win is the call. Performance is more important than the scoreline but for anyone looking to have a bet, a 2-1 England win at 7/1 should provide a good interest in the game.
