The Italian Serie A football season is due to get underway this weekend (barring any La Liga-style strikes) and it is defending champions AC Milan who are favourites to win the league. Milan claimed their eighteenth Scudetto last term as they finished six points clear of Inter and it is much the same squad that bids for back-to-back success this season. They have maintained their squad, bar the sale of Andrea Pirlo to Juventus, and they struck an early blow by beating Inter 2-1 in the Italian Super Cup earlier this month.
Coach Max Allegri has been largely credited for the team spirit he has created at the San Siro as he has managed to get the best out of precocious talents like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho. Ibrahimovic scored 19 goals last year and is 8/1 favourite in the betting to be top Serie A goalscorer this season.
Inter meanwhile are going to have to deal with the loss of last season's top scorer Samuel Eto'o, who is expected to complete a move to Russia that will see him become the most well paid player in the world. Eto'o scored 37 goals in all competitions last year and how Inter replace him will be crucial to their title hopes, with Hills pricing them 11/8.
Next best in the betting for the title are Juventus at 11/2 after Antonio Conte replaced Luigi Del Neri as manager earlier this summer following successive seventh place finishes. Conte has brought in Pirlo and Mirko Vucinic, although his side have struggled in pre-season as they have drawn 0-0 with Betis and lost 2-1 to AC Milan. Conte must cope without the injured Fabio Quagliarella and Vicenzo Iaquinta for the early part of the season and they face a tough task when they open their season against Udinese this weekend.
Udinese finished fourth last year and they are 66/1 to win the league this year, which could offer some each-way value. Meanwhile, they are 12/1 in the 'without AC Milan and Inter' betting market with WilliamHill.com and they look set for another decent season. They may have lost Alexis Sanchez to Barcelona but they performed admirably in their Champions League qualifier against Arsenal and they look more than capable of challenging again this term.
Antonio Di Natale was a big player for them as he ended the season as the top scorer in Serie A for a second successive season. Di Natale scored 28 goals last year and the veteran striker looks a very tempting punt to be top scorer at 10/1 in the betting this year.
Meanwhile, in the betting to win the league Roma are priced 10/1 to win it outright and 11/4 without the Milanese sides. They have recruited Luis Enrique as manager and have made a very interesting signing in Bojan from Barcelona as they bid to improve on last year's sixth place finish.
Napoli look a decent bet at 25/1 (10/3 without AC and Inter) after they finished third last season. They finished 12 points off AC Milan in the end after briefly threatening to break the recent AC-Inter monopoly. The fact they have kept hold of Marek Hamsik and Edison Cavani is crucial to their hopes and how they cope with life in the Champions League will have a big say on their season. They have improved year-on-year but face a tough task to deny AC Milan a nineteenth Scudetto.
