This fixture was supposed to pit together two teams vying for promotion. However, while Southampton have exceeded expectations and lit up the Championship this season, Leicester City have been left in the shadows due to a season that has been plagued by inconsistency. The Saints will be looking to inflict more misery on Leicester at St Mary’s on Monday as they continue their quest for automatic promotion. The last time the two sides met back in August they played out an enthralling five goal thriller, which ended with Leicester inflicting Southampton’s first defeat of the season with a 3-2 win. They will, however, be desperate to regain their ruthlessness at St Mary’s following a shock defeat to Bristol City, a loss that ended their 25-match unbeaten home league record. Meanwhile, Leicester, who before this weekend’s bunch of matches are seven points off the top six, still harbour hopes of making the play-offs and they know that a valuable win on the south coast will not only enhance their promotion chances but boost their confidence.
Saints may be the Championship top goalscorers but they will once again have to do without the league’s number one predator Rickie Lambert who is still suspended. They will therefore look to David Conolly and Guly Do Prado who both scored in their last outing against Forest and can each be backed at 11/2 with Paddy Power to open the scoring on Monday. The Saints recently bolstered their squad with the signing of Japanese striker Tadanari Lee who is priced at 6/1 to open the score on his debut and 16/5 to score anytime in a Southampton win. Saints have won eight and draw four of the last 14 meetings between the sides and have never lost to The Foxes at St Mary’s. They proved they can score goals without start striker Lambert and will be eager to get back to winning ways at home.
