The incredibly early start to the SPL season continues on Sunday when Hibernian host Celtic at Easter Road. The Bhoys are strong favourites to get this campaign off to a winning start after the disappointment of last season.
Celtic really did throw away last season's SPL title to their biggest rivals Rangers as going into the final month of the campaign they were four points off the top of the table but crucially had two games in hand to claim first. They were clear favourites with the bookmakers to stop Rangers from winning a third straight title and after they won their first game it looked like clear sailing. Celtic then went and lost 3-2 at Inverness in a very surprising defeat and effectively lost the title.
Celtic were the better side than Rangers last year, losing fewer games and conceding fewer goals, and the fans believed they should have had the SPL trophy in the bag. The players have had all summer to think about this so they should go into this year’s title race with an extra drive and determination to get it off to the best possible start.
Neil Lennon has brought in a few players this summer to bolster the squad and make sure everyone is fighting for places. They will be spurned on by last season’s failure and know they can’t be complacent as they enter into another title race with Rangers.
Hibernian’s pre-season plans were disrupted by rumours of manager Colin Calderwood heading down south to either Birmingham or Nottingham Forest. Fans heckled the manager at pre-season friendlies over the summer so it will be interesting to see how they respond to him at home on Sunday, On the field, the team haven’t looked like much throughout their warm-up friendlies which isn’t a good sign if they want to improve upon their dreadful 10th place finish last year.
Celtic have a good record over Hibs, winning their last five meetings, and won comfortably last year at Easter Road 3-0. Another similar scoreline could be on the cards with the Bhoys determined to get their campaign off to a winning start so take Celtic (-1) in the handicap market at 24/23 with Unibet.com. Kris Commons will also be looking to carry his form from last season into this campaign so he could be a good bet to try and make an impact on Sunday.
