Man Utd v Wigan Betting: Wayne Rooney a great bet to score on his Premiership return

Wayne Rooney is likely to make a return to the Manchester United fold against Wigan on Saturday for the first time since his flirtation with bitter rivals Manchester City. The game on Saturday afternoon could represent a turning point in the season for United as they look to lay down a marker for their Premier League title challenge. They are unsurprisingly strong favourites to beat Wigan, as Paddy Power offer a United win at 2/9 in the betting, with Wigan an outside 12/1 bet, and the draw is 5/1.

It is exactly four weeks since Rooney's about-turn on his desire to leave United and he still has a lot of making up to do with the fans who may struggle to forgive his unsavoury actions and the resultant boost in pay he received. But football is a fickle game and if Rooney can rediscover the form he displayed last season up until March you can imagine all will be forgiven, and you couldn't bet against him making a goalscoring return on Saturday. In the betting he is 3/1 favourite to score first with Paddy Power in the betting, or a 4/6 bet to score anytime which might represent better value as Sir Alex Ferguson may be tempted to start him from the bench.

Ryan Giggs returns from injury as well but with less fanfare and Paul Scholes is back from suspension after missing the thrilling 2-2 draw at Aston Villa last week. United were outplayed for much of that match, and have laboured to a 0-0 draw against Man City and a 2-1 win over Wolves in recent weeks. Main striker Dimitar Berbatov has struggled to find the back of the net, not scoring in eight Premier League matches since his stunning hat trick destroyed Liverpool. So the game against Wigan looks to come at a good time particularly as United have not lost to Wigan in 11 matches, and they defeated them by five goals to nil in both the home and away matches last season. A repeat of the 5-0 scoreline is a 19/1 bet with paddypower.com and could be worth a look.

For Wigan the game is probably a less welcome fixture as they have conceded 17 goals and score just one in matches at Old Trafford. They languish just above the relegation zone in 17th in the Premier League table but have been on the up in recent weeks, drawing 1-1 against Liverpool and defeating West Brom 2-1.

It looks likely that the two match unbeaten run could some to a shuddering halt this weekend. Their cause isn't helped by the absence of Emerson Boyce with a torn hamstring, as well as Gary Caldwell and James McCarthy. They do however boast an exciting attacking pair in Hugo Rodallega who is 12/1 to score first with Paddy Power, and the young Victor Moses who has attracted praise with his recent performances and he is 18/1 to score first.

It is hard to look anywhere other than a United win and for Wigan it could be a game of damage limitation. Even so the 4-0 scoreline looks very tempting as United should be boosted by their last minute equaliser against Villa last weekend and by the return of Rooney. Paddy Power have the 4-0 correct score as a 10/1 bet, and a bet that is more than 3.5 goals in the match is at 6/4.
