It's refreshing in this day and age that a manager should tear up his contract and not demand any compensation when he leaves a club but that's exactly what Gordon Strachan did on Monday when he left Middlesbrough by mutual consent following a poor spell in charge of the Teesiders. This leaves Boro chairman Steve Gibson on the hunt for a successor with many touting Tony Mowbray for the hotseat, with bookmaker Paddy Power going as short as 2/5 that the former Boro centre-back will be handed the job and become Middlesbrough's next permanent manager.

Gordon Strachan had been manager of Middlesbrough for just under a year having been appointed successor to Gareth Southgate on the 26th October 2009. In that time, Strachan signed a succession of players from the SPL, including former Celtic players Stephen McManus, Scott McDonald and Barry Robson to name a few. The former SPL players have failed to do the business at Boro with the team winning just three of their eleven games in the Championship so far this season. Stachan's departure leaves the new boss with the challenge of lifting Boro up the league where they currently sit 20th.
Tony Mowbray played just under 350 times for Middlesbrough and will be seen as a popular appointment by many Boro fans despite his short and unsuccessful tenure at the helm of Celtic last season. Before that Mowbray had successful managerial campaigns with Hibernian in the SPL and winning promotion from the Championship with West Brom back in the 2007/8 season. The bookies see Mowbray as pretty much a done deal if the odds are anything to go by.
Next best in the betting with Paddy Power is Paul Ince, another former Middlesbrough player. Ince played over one hundred times for Boro but is yet to really convert his success as a player into success in the dugout. Ince has previously managed the MK Dons twice and Blackburn Rovers, most recently for the MK Dons where he left at the end of last season. Ince is a 4/1 shot to take the helm, a best industry price.
Further down the betting are the names which crop up regularly when managers jobs crop up. Phil Brown is a 7/1 shot whilst former West Brom and Bolton boss Gary Megson is 10/1 with Paddypower. Both men are out of work at the moment and would be keen for the chance to manage a club such as Middlesbrough. Relegated two years ago from the Premier League, the requirement is to win back promotion as soon as possible but after a start to the season which they have endured, Boro are now as big as 33/1 to win the League and 8/1 for promotion.
