The 2009/2010 Champions League Quarter and Semi Final have kept the two remaining English clubs, Manchester United and Arsenal apart, meaning that if they can win their respective last eight and last four games they will meet in the final at the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid on 22 May. However, before even thinking about an all English Club final, Manchester United must beat Bayern Munich in the quarter finals and Arsenal must beat reigning champions and favourites Barcelona in theirs.

Clearly the draw has thrown up four fantastic ties, with star billing probably going to the Arsenal v Barcelona battle, bringing together two purist football teams, where plenty of goals can be expected. It was Barcelona of course who defeated Arsenal in the final of 2006 and who also beat Man Utd in the final last year. It is a particularly a good draw for Arsenal captain, Cesc Fabregas, who can return to Spain and play against the team who have openly expressed their desire to make him a ‘Barca’ player next season.

United will travel to Munich for their first leg, and play Bayern who they beat in the 1999 final. Munich also has the nightmare memory of the Munich air crash of 1958 in which several United players at the time lost their lives.

Should Arsenal beat the odds and get through to the semi final they are likely to play Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan in the semi final, whereas, United will play either Lyon or Bordeaux, who have been drawn together in the quarter final, thus guaranteeing a French club in the semi’s.
