Wigan v Spurs betting gives little value to Redknapp's Team

It will be with some trepidation that Wigan boss, Roberto Martinez selects his team to face Spurs at the DW Stadium this weekend. There is little doubt that the 9-1 thrashing that Spurs inflicted on his team at White Hart Lane back in November will be weighing heavily on his mind, and he will be praying that such a result does not happen again. Martinez will no doubt have a plan to prevent that type of defeat, but whether or not the psychological blow of such a humiliation can be completely eradicated is open to debate.

Certainly the Bookmakers believe that a similar result is highly unlikely, Ladbrokes for instance have Spurs as only an Even Money bet to win the match, with Wigan given odds of 11/4 and the draw 12/5. In fact there are no odds at all for a 9-1 Spurs win, but punters looking for an unlikely score can back a Spurs 9-0 win at 300/1.

On current form, it might be advisable to back the draw; Wigan’s last three results have all been draws, while Spurs have had four draws in their last seven matches and with both sides desperate for the points that outcome would be quite logical.

Harry Redknapp, who has worked wonders at Spurs since his arrival 18 months ago, will know that his main priority is to get his team into a top four spot but will recognize that he is in a four way battle to achieve this and also that this weekend could be pivotal in that battle. A win therefore is what he will be thinking and we believe he will ‘set his stall’ out to attack from the off.

This task will be made even more sensible with the news that Aaron Lennon should be back for the match. It is clear that they have missed him over the last few weeks and it was he who provided much of the impetus for that famous Spurs 9-1 victory, scoring and assisting Defoe with a few of the five goals he racked up in that match. Coincidence has it that Lennon had been out with injury for three games before that last Wigan match! What price that ‘lightening will strike twice’?

Defoe has been in the form of his life this season and has good odds of 9/2 to open the scoring against Wigan; he is also around the 20/1 mark to score a hat-trick with Ladbrokes
