The FA Cup has reached its final stage as Manchester City and Stoke City will go head-to-head in the final at Wembley on Saturday 14th May as they each bid to end long trophy droughts. 759 teams entered the competition and that has now been whittled down to these, perhaps surprising, final two and Man City go in as odds on favourites in the betting with Victor Chandler bookmakers.
Roberto Mancini's side has been underdogs going into their semi-final match with bitter rivals Man United but emerged victorious thanks to a Yaya Toure goal and a Paul Scholes sending off as they won through 1-0. It was a close match and despite United being tournament favourites, City upset the betting with a professional display and are hot favourites to end a 35 year long major trophy drought.
The Manchester side will be playing in their first FA Cup final for 30 years and it is a further five since they won a trophy of any note. The heavy investment has paid dividends as Mancini looks to add a first English trophy to the Serie A and Coppa Italia trophies he won as a manager in Italy. Their expensively assembled squad appear to be most people's shoe-ins to win the trophy as VCBet make them 1/3 on to lift the trophy and 7/10 on to win the match in 90 minutes, but Stoke are not to be underestimated and they could thrive as underdogs.
Stoke stunned Bolton 5-0 in the semi-finals as they recorded the largest victory margin in an FA Cup semi-final in 72 years after storming into a 3-0 half time lead. It is a remarkable turnaround for a club that has only been in the Premier League since 2008, but since then they have very much made themselves a fixture in the division with consistent mid-table finishes.
Even if they lose the FA Cup final, they are likely to secure Europa League football for next season - assuming Man City finish fourth in the league. But manager Tony Pulis won't be content with a runner up spot as they look to win their first major trophy since League Cup glory in 1972. Pulis himself is looking to end a silverware drought of his own as in 19 years as manager he has still to win a trophy.
His side certainly go in as underdogs at Wembley in the betting as Victor Chandler price them at an industry best of 9/4 to lift the trophy, and also go an industry best bet of 4/1 for them to win the match in 90 minutes. The draw can be backed at 5/2 in the betting at this stage.
Stoke though are unbeaten in four matches against Man City since December 2009 and knocked them out of the FA Cup at the fifth round stage last season, so the final may not be the foregone conclusion that the betting and many pundits are predicting.
