It is somewhat ironic that Chelsea who has splashed out £50m on top striker Fernando Torres has failed to find the net since defeating Sunderland 4-2 on the 1st February. However the former Liverpool striker is cup tied and will sit out this 4th round FA Cup replay against Everton at Stamford Bridge, thus allowing Chelsea boss, Carlos Ancelotti to revert back to his old guard of Drogba and Anelka up front. The Bookmakers are emphatically supporting a Chelsea victory with VC Bet quoting them at 4/7 to win the match, 16/5 the draw and an industry best price of 11/2 for an Everton win.
The two sides, who met in the 2009 FA Cup final, played out a 1-1 draw at the end of January at Goodison Park which was also the outcome in the Premier League fixture played at the ‘Bridge’ at the beginning of September; results that suggest that this game will be extremely tight, with probably few goals. Everton are not helped by the fact that Louis Saha who scored in the original tie will be missing with yet another injury.
Chelsea of course has won the FA Cup three times in the last four years and in domestic football terms have only this left to aim for this season, after an extremely disappointing league campaign so far. Their once revered home record has been shattered four times already this season by Manchester United, Newcastle, Sunderland and more recently, Liverpool and a further defeat at the hands of the ‘Toffees’ would almost certainly mean plenty of betting activity in the next Chelsea Manager Odds market.
The key player probably in this match will be Didier Drogba, who has scored seven times in ten Premier League games against Everton and also scored against them in the 2009 FA Cup final. Without Torres he will almost certainly lead the attack and would be a very good bet to score the opening goal with odds of 4/1, with Anelka next best at 5/1 with Malouda and Kalou, who scored the Chelsea goal in the original tie, both at 6/1. The ever dangerous, Tim Cahill is the player most likely if Everton were to score the first goal, with tempting odds of 9/1.
It will be of great interest to see exactly what team Ancelotti selects for this match, particularly with a very tricky, Champions League fixture against FC Copenhagen coming up in midweek. It could be that he leaves Frank Lampard out of the starting line up but will undoubtedly select new signing Luiz in central defence with captain, John Terry. Everton boss, David Moyes meanwhile will probably give a start to Jermaine Beckford in place of Saha.
All in all this is not an easy game to call, but Chelsea do have a clear upper hand and should prevail even if it means going into extra time to time to win. A scoreline of only 1-0 will suffice and is an outcome that can be backed at with extremely tempting odds of 11/2 available from Victor Chandler
As far as the FA Cup overall betting is concerned, Manchester United are favourites with odds of 11/4, Arsenal are next best at 4/1, Chelsea at 5/1 and Manchester City at 6s. Everton fans therefore will be very tempted by the 25/1 on offer about their team winning the trophy for the first time since 1995.
