Wounded Manchester City set to trounce Newcastle United in Premier League clash

Newcastle United came in for huge criticism in the aftermath of their 1-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester City a few weeks ago, as the Magpies failed to put any sort of pressure on the runaway leaders, and just sat back and tried to soak up the Cityzen onslaught, but in light of Pep Guardiola's men tasting their first defeat of the season against Liverpool last weekend, will Rafael Benitez approach Saturday's tea-time kick-off differently?

  • Manchester City suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season against Liverpool last weekend
  • Manchester City beat Newcastle United 1-0 on December 27
  • Newcastle United are three points above relegation zone

How Will It Go?

Guardiola's City will be like a wounded animal going into Saturday's match, and they will be desperate to return to winning ways, and it's hard to see them not picking up three points against a Newcastle side that are three points above the drop zone, and City are entitled to be clear 1/8 favourites with Coral bookmakers.

Some may argue that City's first defeat of the domestic campaign was due to a poor defensive play, but Liverpool's attacking players produced a sensational performance to harrass the City rearguard, and they certainly took a leaf out of Bristol City's book, as the Championship side had attacked the Premier League side's defence, and Liverpool unlocked the flaky rearguard with ease.

However, Bristol City were unable to maintain that attacking effort for 90 minutes, and lost, but Liverpool were, but in the case of Newcastle you have to feel like the Robins they lack the personnel to worry City for long periods, and the 25/1 with Unibet for a Newcastle win is not going to happen, while the 9/1 draw with Paddy Power also makes no appeal in this Manchester City v Newcastle United match.

So, it would be no surprise to see City fly out of the traps and try to dominate the game like they did at St James' Park on December 27, and City should comfortably cruise to victory, and maintain their dominant lead at the top of the table.

City To Dominate Early

With Newcastle likely to adopt defensive tactics from the outset then it would be no surprise to see City unleash an early onslaught on their opponents, and if they can grab an early goal then that may take the Magpies out of their defensive shell, and City can score with ease before half-time.

Guardiola is sure to have one eye on Tuesday night's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg with Bristol City, which they lead 2-1, so he will hope his side can go at least two goals in front at half-time, and could then rest a few key players, so with that in mind, the 23/10 with Coral for the first half to be the highest scoring is the best bet.

Aguero The Safe Option To Open Scoring

With Gabriel Jesus still on the sidelines then Sergio Aguero will lead the line for City, and while it's somewhat of a boring first scoring selection, the diminutive Argentinian international can ignite a comfortable City win, and at 23/10 with Unibet he can unlock the Magpies defence, who could be in for a tough evening at the Etihad Stadium.
