Birmingham could move a step closer to another Wembley appearance when they play Sheffield Wednesday at St Andrews on Saturday afternoon. The League Cup finalists are hot favourites to win the FA Cup fifth round tie against their League One opponents and are industry best priced odds of 4/6 with William Hill. Wednesday can backed at odds of 4/1, or alternatively the draw is an industry best 14/5.
The last time these two sides met was back in 2009 when they were both battling it out in the Championship but much has changed since then with Birmingham now 14th in the Premier League and Wednesday languishing in 16th in League One. Sheffield Wednesday have failed to win at St Andrews in their last three attempts and we fancy that run could extend to four this weekend.
Birmingham manager Alex McCleish will have half an eye on the relegation battle his side could find themselves dragged into in the Premier League and their League Cup final at Wembley against Arsenal later this month, so he may take the chance to rest a few players on Saturday with doubts over the fitness of Liam Ridgewell, Martin Jiranek and Curtis Davies.
It means the goal shy Cameron Jerome could be reinstated after being dropped for the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in mid-week and we fancy him to score first this weekend with Hills. He may only have three goals this season but he has a point to prove and will be keen to work his way into the League Cup final side and at odds of 4/1 to score first against League One opposition he is well worth a look.
They beat Coventry 3-2 in the last round and have been scoring freely in cup competition which is in stark contrast to their league form, while Sheffield Wednesday have conceded first in 10 of their last 11 in League One and have kept just one clean sheet in 15 matches in all competitions. They did beat Hereford 4-1 in the fourth round and over 2.5 goals this weekend can be backed at odds of 4/5.
They have appointed Gary Megson to replace Alan Irvine in a desperate attempt to reverse their flagging fortunes but the former West Brom manager is still to taste victory in three attempts. He maligned the 'suicidal defending' in their recent 3-0 defeat to Tranmere and a run of nine without a win in the league tells its own stories, and it could be worth backing Birmingham in the handicap market with -1 goal at odds of 17/10 with WilliamHill.com.
Wednesday will rely on former Birmingham man Clinton Morrison for goals and the 16 goal striker has scored five in his last four in the FA Cup and he looks good value at 11/4 to score anytime at his old ground.
Ultimately on current form Birmingham should win through and the two goal winning margin is available at odds of 18/5, or alternatively the 3-1 scoreline is 12/1 as they look to go a step closer to a second Wembley appearance of the season.
