The eagerly anticipated South Coast Derby takes place this Sunday when Portsmouth host fierce local rivals Southampton at Fratton Park. League leaders Southampton have stumbled slightly in recent weeks, while a resurgent Portsmouth head into the match looking for their third straight win. Paddy Power have installed Southampton as the 11/10 favourites for the three points, while Portsmouth can be backed at 23/10, with a draw available at 12/5.
Southampton’s remarkable record of 21 straight home league wins came to an end last weekend when they were held to an entertaining 2-2 draw by Ian Holloway’s Blackpool. As a result the Saints have now picked up just the one win in their last four matches and it took a last gasp Rickie Lambert header to snatch a draw against the Seasiders. In contrast to their sparkling form at St Mary’s the Saints have struggled on the road, having only won once on their travels since 16th August, with their last two outings resulting in disappointing defeats at lowly Bristol City and Doncaster.
In contrast Portsmouth’s performances have improved of late, with just the one defeat in six matches, including two wins on the spin. Their home form has been decent this campaign, with six wins and two draws from 10 matches, and they are unbeaten in their last five games at Fratton Park. Furthermore, Pompey have got the better of Southampton in recent meetings, thrashing them 4-1 at St Mary’s in the FA Cup fifth round tie in 2010 and 4-1 at home the last time the two sides met in the league in 2005, the season Southampton were relegated from the Premier League.
Due to Pompey’s recent revival and Southampton’s away woes this could prove to be a very evenly contested derby. There is sure to be a spicy atmosphere and the Portsmouth supporters will no doubt create a cauldron of hostility in order to unsettle the Saints players. There is sure to be goals in this fixture, with a 2-2 draw well worth a bet at 12/1. Portsmouth are available at 10/1 to clinch it 2-1, while the Saints are priced at 15/2 to win by the same scoreline with PaddyPower.
Rickie Lambert has been in scintillating form this season, reflected in his position as the Championship Top Goalscorer with an impressive 14 league goals to his name this season. The striker, who scored the last time the teams met, is well worth a punt as the 9/2 favourite to open the scoring on Sunday afternoon. Guly Do Prado is also a tempting bet at 6/1, while Adam Lallana is priced at 7/1 with Paddy Power.
It is worth bearing in mind that Southampton have only scored the first goal of the game in one of their last eight away matches, while Portsmouth have scored the opener in their last five matches at Fratton Park. Pompey’s Benjani Mwaruwari can be backed at 13/2 to be the first goalscorer and with two goals in three games David Norris could prove to be a fruitful bet at 8/1.
