Preston North End travel to MK Dons for Saturday night's live Sky game without a permanent manager after Phil Brown was sacked earlier in the week. David Unsworth and Graham Alexander have jointly taken charge of first team affairs whilst the search for Brown's replacement continues. Brown was dismissed following a woeful run of form which saw PNE win just once in eleven league games or 16 in all competitions! Peter Ridsdale was appointed the club's new chairman just last week and the former Leeds, Cardiff and Plymouth chief has wasted no time in acting try and save Preston's season.
On paper, a trip to Stadium MK is probably not the best chance of North End making a return to winning ways and even before Brown was axed, MK Dons were the clear cut favourites to win this game. Karl Robinson's side has won seven games on the bounce in all competitions and remain unbeaten at home in the league this season and as such, are justifiably 8/11 to extend that impressive run of form with either Blue Square or Stan James. Preston can be backed at a best price of 9/2 with Victor Chandler, who also offer the best odds about the draw at 3/1.
If PNE are to get anything from this game, they will have to hope that team spirit carries them through the 90 minutes and that Unsworth and Alexander can get the players motivated enough to make a game of it with MK Dons. Six losses from the last seven on the road will have surely knocked the confidence of the Preston players but the absence of Lilywhites strikers, Iain Hume and Neil Mellor, who've both been out since October, won't have helped matters. Hume made a return to the first team as a second half substitute in last weekend's 0-0 draw at home to Stevenage and the Canadian International striker, who had scored five goals before his injury will provide a much welcomed boost to Preston's attack alongside the team's top scorer, Neil Mellor, who also returned from injury recently and will be looking to add to his tally of eight goals on Saturday evening.
Both Hume and Mellor are both 21/10 to score at anytime with Paddy Power or 7/1 to bag the opener and if Preston are to get amongst the goals, then these two are going to be key. However, it is the MK Dons forward pairing of Charlie MacDonald and Dean Bowditch who are the bookmakers favourites to score the first goal of the game. Both have scored five goals each in League One so far this season and can be backed at 5/4 and 7/5 respectively to add to that haul whilst MacDonald is the favourite in the first goalscorer market at 9/2 with Bowditch a 5/1 chance. However, it could pay to back Milton Keynes most in form player in front of goal right now, Jabo Ibhere, who has scored in four of the club's last five league games and makes plenty of appeal at 9/5 to score at anytime with Paddy Power.
With both teams boasting goalscoring threats, this game has the potential to be a high scoring affair. Between them, the MK Dons and Preston have been involved in 31 games since August that have seen three or more goals scored, a stat that firmly points towards a bet on over 2.5 goals at 8/11 if you're happy to back odds on shots. If you're looking for a bit more value, MK Dons to win 3-2 at 25/1 looks tempting whilst if you think Preston can get something from the game, a speculative punt on a 3-3 draw at 66/1 with Boylesports could provide a bit of interest and help pay for the Christmas shopping!
