Why Chelsea should give John Terry a new contract

John Terry may not have made the trip to Paris this evening for Chelsea's last-16 first leg clash with Paris Saint-Germain, but Blues fans will have to get used to not seeing their talismanic skipper in Champions League match squads, as the man they have emblazoned with banners around Stamford Bridge as their 'Captain, Leader, Legend' is set for his final year at a club he has spent two decades at.

However, the baffling decision for the powers above at the 2014/2015 Premier League champions to not offer the former England international a new contract will only hit home when they take to the field next season, as they look to bounce back from a potentially woeful campaign this time around.

Terry's All Gold And Should Be Given Contract

Players are often ridiculed for extravagantly kissing their club badge, but for John Terry, Chelsea is in his blood, as a fresh-faced 14-year-old the former England skipper ignited what has been a sensational career at the highest level. but 21 years on the man who has made over 700 appearances for the club, winning a plethora of medals in that time, appears to have had the door slammed abruptly in his face.

But why you may ask? It's certainly a baffling decision in my mind. Yes, he may not be the player he was a few seasons ago, when many regarded him as the best centre half in the game, and that was an accolade he was certainly a competitor for, but with his vast experience at the highest level, it's surely time to utilise his wealth of knowledge in the game to let him help out the emerging talent at the club.

Now 35, Terry would certainly not be able to play every game in what is a tough schedule, and with Kurt Zouma and Gary Cahill now prominent figures in the Chelsea back-line, Terry would not feature in every match, but forget his ability on the pitch for a moment, and think what he brings off of it, and the inclusion of Terry within the dressing room will certainly teach respect to the young recruits, while his never-say-die attitude is a trait that needs to become embedded in a club that has been well and truly off the pace this season.

What Next For JT?

Chelsea Football Club appear to relish the opportunity of showing the door to some of their fan's favourites, as the likes of Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Petr Cech, a triumvirate idolised by the Stamford Bridge faithful, have all departed under a cloud, and it now looks as though John Terry will be the next in line to be given no sort of fanfare and just sent packing on to pastures new.

But, where will see arguably the greatest Premier League defender plying his trade next? Terry has been stoic in his thoughts that he wouldn't contemplate donning the shirt of another Premier League club, but can we seriously believe that if Jose Mourinho takes over the reins at Manchester United in the near future, that the manager Terry has held a strong bond with for the last decade will not try and lure his former skipper to Old Trafford.

Mourinho would surely be the first man knocking on Terry's door to try and snare him to the Theatre of Dreams, and would Terry be able to relinquish the opportunity of teaming up with his old gaffer, and trying to extend his Premier League career, and Paddy Power certainly believe Terry could be Manchester bound, as he is 5/1 with the Irish bookmaker to be seen next in a United shirt.

Like most ageing international stars, the MLS has become an attractive proposition, and it's the New York Red Bulls and L.A Galaxy that are 4/1 favourites to snap up Terry's signature, but Chelsea really need to weigh up the chances of Terry heading to the north west of England, and if Mourinho were to sign on the dotted line at Old Trafford, then the man with 78 England international caps could become a red!
