Mark Hughes will oversee his first match at Loftus Road on Tuesday night as his new QPR side take on MK Dons in an FA Cup third round replay. Rangers start as 8/11 odds on favourites for the match, while Dons are a best priced 7/2 and the draw is also best priced at 11/4 with Stan James.
Hughes will have to defy recent Rangers' history if he is to taste victory for the first time with his new team. QPR remarkably haven't won an FA Cup match in 11 years and they needed a late Heidar Helguson equaliser to rescue a replay in a 1-1 draw with MK Dons last weekend.
Neil Warnock was of course in charge then and Hughes will hope Helguson performs as well for him as he did for the last boss. Helguson has scored eight goals in fifteen appearances this season and he could be worth backing to be first goalscorer at 9/2.
Rangers will have to do without the services of the suspended Joey Barton this week, while Adel Taarabt is at the African Cup of Nations. They are a couple of big losses and they will need a big response after losing 1-0 to Newcastle in Hughes' first match in charge on Sunday, a result which leaves them eighteenth in the Premier League.
They are in serious relegation trouble after failing to win any of their last ten matches, although they haven't been overwhelmed by too many teams as seven of their last nine have involved under 2.5 goals and under 2.5 is priced 10/11 by Stan James.
Rangers have been notoriously slow starters of late as they haven't been ahead at half time in their last eight outings, with StanJames.com going 3/1 for the double result of a half time draw and full time QPR win. Meanwhile, the second half to be the highest scoring half can be backed at an industry best priced 11/10, which looks particularly good when you consider that the last six goals in MK Dons' matches have come in the second 45 minutes.
The Dons are currently fifth in League One and they certainly won't be any pushovers against their Premier League opponents as they have gone unbeaten in their last six away matches. There is a big worry over the fitness of nine goal striker Charlie MacDonald (8/1 to score first), as well as Gary MacKenzie, and that would leave Dean Bowditch to shoulder the burden of scoring and he is 9/1 to score first.
They certainly look capable of grabbing a goal as they have scored at least two goals in each of their last six away, while they have managed ten goals in the FA Cup so far. They come up against a QPR defence that has failed to keep a clean sheet in thirteen and both teams to score is currently priced 8/11 on.
MK Dons haven't qualified for the fourth round of the FA Cup since 2004 though and they might struggle to secure a fourth round home tie against Chelsea this week. QPR can edge this one but they are unlikely to have it all their own way, with the correct score of 2-1 available at 13/2 with stanjames.
