The second round of quarter-finals for Copa America 2011 take place on Sunday and it’s a familiar match which gets us underway. A flaw in the tournament format means Brazil must now face their Group B opponents Paraguay once again.
Brazil progressed to the knockout stages of the competition after they defeated Ecuador 4-2 on Wednesday to top their group ahead of Venezuela on goal difference. Paraguay, meanwhile, had to settle for a best 3rd place finish spot to get to the quarters after they could only draw their final group game 3-3 with Venezuela.
Last Saturday, Brazil and Paraguay played out a very entertaining 2-2 draw but it seems the bookmakers have no trouble this week in deciding who they think will come out on top and have installed the Brazilians as heavy favourites at 3/5.
This is a bit of a surprise as Paraguay very nearly won last week’s encounter between the two sides. After Brazil went ahead just before the interval, Paraguay took control of the game after the break and scored two goals thanks to Roque Santa Cruz and substitute Nelson Haedo Valdez. They then had a chance to bury Brazil in the closing stages of the game when they missed a golden opportunity in the 82nd minute.
Brazil, whose attacking was far from fluid throughout the game, then needed a goal in the last minute courtesy of substitute Fred to salvage a point and keep their chances of retaining the Copa America alive.
For a game against the same opponents they nearly beat just one week ago, Paraguay seems like very good value at 5/1 with Unibet to beat Brazil. They did only draw their final game against Venezuela but Paraguay were cruising in that match until they took their foot off the gas in the last few minutes and gifted their opposition two goals to tie the match at 3-3.
Brazil were much improved in their final group game against Ecuador, thrashing them 4-2 to secure top spot, but they might be getting too much credit for that performance. Santos striker Neymar was on the score-sheet twice along with Alexandre Pato but this was against a very poor Ecuador side who finished with just one point from three games, the second lowest in the competition.
Paraguay are a much more organised defensive outfit and Brazil will not find it as easy to break them down. The Paraguayan’s will be quietly confident that they can keep it tight on Sunday and then hit Brazil on the counter. They have a great chance of scoring against a defence who looked pretty shaky against a poor Ecuador attack just a couple of days ago.
For their price, Paraguay offer great value to get the victory over Brazil in a game shown live on Unibet TV and cause a major upset in the Copa America 2011.
