The Spain v Switzerland odds for Wednesday afternoon's Group H matchup has the World Cup favourites as the red-hot favourites to get their campaign off to a winning start. Vicente Del Bosque's side are as short as 1/4 to overcome the Swiss who are a best price 14/1 with Victor Chandler to spring what would be the biggest shock of the tournament so far and the draw can be backed at 9/2.
Several draws already in the tournament has seen punters struggling to hit the bookies where it hurts but this should be one game that goes the way of backers. Having already shortened in the betting to win the competition from 4/1 to 7/2, without having yet kicked a ball, the pressure is on Spain to start as they mean to go on and that means an impressive display and at least a couple of goals. However, for all the expactions this year and in previous years, Spain have an abysmal record in the World Cup. They have won only four of their 12 opening matches in past tournaments and have failed to progress past the Quarter Finals since 1950. Therefore, the current squad really must hit the ground running if they are to prove the trends wrong.
Anyone looking to back Spain to beat Switzerland will be pleased to know that they won both the opening matches in the 2002 and 2006 finals, scoring nine goals in the process. Their form heading in to the tournament could also not be any better having won their last six matches scoring an average of three goals per game in the process. Add to that their 10 wins from 10 in World Cup qualification and their Euro 2008 success and it's difficult not to see anything other than a convincing win for the Spanish.
A 3-0 win for Spain at 13/2 with Victor Chandler makes plenty of appeal against a Swiss side that is without a win in five and given the number of lowscoring matches so far in the World Cup, this does have the hallmarks of a goalfest and braver punters could do worse than have a speculative couple of quid on Spain to really justify their credentials by backing 4-0 and 5-0 at 16/1 and 40/1 respectively with Skybet. A 4-0 victory over Ukraine in their opening match four years ago proves they are capable of hitting the ground running.
Anybody looking for a bet on the first goalscorer cannot look beyond David Villa who boasts a prolific strike rate of 66% with 38 goals in 58 games and despite beign just 7/2 with Stan James to open the scoring, it is difficult to make a better argument for any of the alternatives.

Whilst World Cup history isn't on their side, recents stats and form certainly are and they should be far too good for Switzerland and a 3-0 Spain victory at 13/2 with Victor Chandler looks the best bet.
